I think excomunication from religious community is very hard punnishment to stay it. Btw, can it be "bribed" to be pulled back by your piety?
Example: you have very high piety, but got excomunicated from political reasons (if this is possible, ofcourse). So you spend your piety and excominication push your kingdom power and relations to allies back to same level as before
