Unit Surrender question

When units surrender in the game, do they actually stop fighting and lay down their weapons, or something like that? Or is it more like in medieval total war, where it looks like you kill them but they just count as captured.

the 2 cases for retreat or surrender i know are:

1. the leader/knight of the army got killed (what is hard to do)
2. the moral is dropping (to many loses or out of food)

frank or frujin had described you see an army without weapons AFTER the battle in WV, in case of surrender/capture
