I have found this chart showing Titles of nobility (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobility#Titles_of_nobility) on the Wikipedia site - great site IMO ;)

Every title fots to certain region. Earldoms like Frujin describes above, fit to Ireland (before English rule there were quite small "states"
Dukes, Marchgraves and Counts for states of Holy Roman Empire
Counts and dukes for french vassals
princes for Russian states
despots for Balkan states
dukes and princes for Poland
Basileus for Byzantine empire
Emirs, Sultans and Caliphs for muslim states

I guess Frujin already considered this :) before he "involved" them in the game.
