This page contains a demographic profile of the area I've called "Caleys". This a single block of Edinburgh tenements, which all share a common "backgreen". The area is defined by Caledonian Road, Caledonian Crescent, Caledonian Place and Dalry Road.

Method

Caleys has been defined as four and a half 2001 Census Output Areas. An Output Area is the smallest unit of published census geography. The four complete areas are: two on the Caledonian Road side (60QP003272 and 60QP003273), one for the Caledonian Crescent side (60QP001773), and one on the Caledonian Place side (60QP001771). The Dalry Road side Output Area (60QP003702) also includes areas on the north side of Dalry Road. I have assumed that half this area is in Caleys, and so divided all the data for the area in two.

If that sounds crude, consider that the census is inaccurate to start with, and at the time of writing it is already four years old. The data should still give a reasonable indication of the current situation, but it cannot be quoted to the nearest person or household.

Commentary

Over 400 people live in Caleys, spread across almost 250 households.

The people tend to be:

Socially the area is mixed, with a tangible number in all groups, from senior managerial/professional to those on benefits. The area has above average proportions in supervisory/junior managerial/professional roles, and also above average proportions of low-skilled workers. Just over half of the workforce are in paid jobs, which is fairly typical of the city. The below-average proportion of retired people is offset by an above average number of students - 22% of those aged 16 to 74 are involved in some form of full or part-time education.

Residents own about 40% of housing, 35% is private rented, and just under 25% is social rented (housing associations).

Car ownership levels are very low, with two thirds of households owning no vehicles. A third of people walk or cycle to work or school, and almost a third use public transport. Both these proportions are above average, even for the City of Edinburgh.

Data Tables

The data tables also show comparative data for the City of Edinburgh (local authority) and Scotland (nation).
