modified by 3D Guru to work with 7900er series
I've tested that driver and could not find a difference to version 93.71

now i will go and make screenshots from Nvidia Control Center

Well Ma'am,

Forgive for being so bold to start. You clone junk, you end up with junk. I put the 93.71s through my usual tests and they failed miserably the first day. Stable while idle, but not when things are executed. Of course this is just my opinion, but I have others on other forums who will back me on this. What you need to try first is the 91.47s you'll find a link to in the opening post of My nVidia Thread (http://forum.sunflowers.de/showthread.php?t=15850) (although in the KoH tech forums). Reason I'm referring you to this link is all the instructions and notes of the Sticky here are all in one post. If you did as many and used the nVidia methold to uninstall that is overkill and my method is both safer and easier. So, that is point #1 to see if it will help.

Not all though by any means. Your pagefile is inadequate for the amount of RAM you have. So, you need to increase it. For all viewing this, double your physical RAM in minimum but NEVER over 4096 in BOTH locations. So, here is what to do next as well:

1. Open Control Panel (classic view) and Open System.
2. Click on the Advanced tab then click the Settings button under Performance. (A new window will oepn.)
3. Click the Advanced tab on the new window and down at the bottom under Virtual Memory click the Change button. (Another new window will open.)
4. (This next instruction is directed only to LadyH as it might not be the same for the rest of you.) Highlight the Device that has numbers to the right of the device name/number. You'll see below two entry boxes to enter numbers. If they are greyed out, click the uppermost selector "dot". If numbers are visible disregard.
5. Enter the number that is at least double your RAM (in your case LadyH 4096) in BOTH boxes, then click the Set button.
7. Most of you will get a pop-up widnow. If the message says you do not have enough room, click the OK button and make it less in increments of 256 in both locations until accepted. If you get the message you need to reboot to save changes, click OK.
7a. NOTE: If have multiple devices that are a part of your actual system (not plug-in add-ons), you can add virtual memory to them as well, but the total of all the drives must NOT exceed 4096.
8. If you have Apply highlighted on that window, click it and click Close. Keep doing this on each window until they are either all closed or you get a pop-up asking you to reboot. DO NOT reboot when asked. Close any and all remaining windows.
9. Click Start -> Turn Off Computer -> Restart
10. Upon reboot DO NOT do anything just yet. What to do first is a Disk Clean-up then Defragment any harddrives you have changed.
11. All Done!!! Now, try the game and see if it's improved.

So try these first. If still not what you desire LadyH, this is just the first step. DO NOT chagne anything back though! We'll hope this will do but if not, we do have more options to help optimize your system even more to get it to work better. Good Luck!

Sincerely,
Phil

Thank you Phil for this statement

my only focus is to optimize that ASUS EN7950GX2 for ANNO 1701.
Nothing more. My system is running as fine as I want to.

My pagefile is fixed on 1024/1024 and for the game it doesn't matter if it is higher or not. You know, a too big pagefile can cause a higher (or to high) administrative expense for the OS and a 32 bit application can handle max. 2 GByte.

About the drivers:
I've had that 91.47 at release of the game
then the 93.71 came and it was a real great ingame speed up
there were much more FPS

Now you tell me to downgrade?
You understand that I entertain some doubt? :beek:

I found a screenshot to confirm that it's running real stable

Sorry to disagree with you M'Lady.

Before I start to note things, I do want you to know there is no intent to provoke or upset you in the process. This is just what I have learned over many years of working with Microsoft, Hardware, and Software manufacturers and products as I have little else to do in my current conditon (of over 12 years now).

As noted, I've spent many hours with MS (over the phone), and from them there is NO harm in a large pageil of any size as long as it does not exceed what I have noted (4096). By default you should have at least 1.5 times your system RAM and more makes the refreshing of the RAM less severe and less often in frequency. I currenly (as I will soon upgrade when affordable) only have 512MB and my pagefile is set to 2304 (2.25GB) and my system and all apllications run much better than I had with the default of 1024 from the start. As I increase my RAM so will I increase my pagefile. It is also a known fact that some games (even though not stated on the box) also do better with larger pagefiles. One I have helped people with in particular gets best results if the pagefiel is 2048 minimum and many go up to 3076 as that makes it even smoother in running if the people have ample space for Windows, their pagefile and the game to be accomodated for as some don't have that much free, and some not even enough for Windows (15% of total capacity and MS suggests 20%) to breathe.

As to the drivers, as I ntoed before and numerous times on other forums where I help, the 93.71s are the worst drivers nVidia has approved in a very long time. Much worse than the 84.21s which had overheating issues as one example. I have tested all their drivers since the 61.77s (that were approved anyway) and to this day will only suggest three versions. The best being those I noted to you. Newer does not always mean better as this is not only true of nVidia, but also ATI and other hardware manugacturer's drivers (mice being another example). If you would like me to elaborate further, I'll be glad to but think it best not to note it here as the number of links would make people sick to see and this is only for your benefit I'd do this. So, I leave it up to you if you'd like further evidence that I know for a fact that the 93.71s and any clone of them are not suitable to get the best out of your card.

You also noted your system is fine for what you want. Is it?! What if your problems with the game ARE related to your system not being optimized? I can't say as I'll agree to that with my not only personal experiences but also the many that I have helped as well. These were just the obvious things in your file, but I could go on into many more things and I'm willing to take odds, this will improve not only your system, but the game as well. This was just the starting point as I wanted you to go through all the steps and try the game after each one to see when you'd get what you desire. The last thing I would have done is your in-game setting with the 91.47s as once the system is optimized, you'll get better results with the right drivers and moreso than you can imapinge right now. So again, not to sound confrontational, but the choice is yours from here and as I said. If you'd like further evidence I can provide, but don't want to turn this thread into a thread full of links to make it evident. My Best!

Sincerely,
Phil

Hi Phil :halloha:
now i've fixed the pagefile to 1536/1536
Page File: 406MB used, 3023MB available

and changed video driver
Driver Version: 6.14.0010.9147 (English)

It feels like the machine is running slower.
Even if I open Windows Explorer and klick on a folder http://www.cosgan.de/images/smilie/frech/r015.gif
and when I will start PhotoImpact (for example) http://www.cosgan.de/images/midi/muede/b040.gif

Just got to your reply, LadyH. I had just the opposite problem with the 93.71s and as I've noted I WON'T use a beta version (after past experineces) which includes trying them. So, it does come down to choices.

From the sounds of it, you most likely have too many other things running with those temperatures OR (can't say for sure) faulty components as you can get bad off the shelf. This is why I've optimized my system so heavlily and in my condition performce too makes things run hotter. I'm not into "eye candy", but I have to adjust for quality so I can play and enjoy.

It is difficult since we have only one other way to ago about this that is suitable for you, so it is of your chosing now as to what to do. I say it's too much running in the background (and can help if desired as I know what is truly needed) or components. In either case a better optimized system can help, but won't confront or contradict what you think if you won't agree to what I suggest. All cards I've had test these things have improved results, so all I can do is advise. The choice will be yours in the end.

Anno and Caesar 4 are the games with the biggest resource draws thus far, and many have found success by doing what my suggestions have been, including a couple here. It could be (if you don't have one already) and internal cooling system might need to be installed or some type. My one PC runs 24/7 and I never have those type of temperatures and I live where it is much hotter than where you are.

Sincerely,
Phil

Why don't you just get to it, Phil. MAKE the specific suggestions rather ask for permission to do so. Write up the contingencies and explain it. There's too much turn taking and time wasted about this, IMO.

Also, you do realize that your premise of there being one best driver (or two) is potentially hugely flawed given the vast number of different hardware configurations out there, right? This sort of topic is covered a lot in many tweak/oc sites when video drivers come up.

And I beg to differ: M2TW with HIGHEST level shadows, an *no* sprite substitution for distance and everything else turned up to the maximum with about 6000 men in four armies on the battle all at once level staggers my system *graphically* more than 1701 or the other game you mention by far. But I doubt lady H has that game.

There is a reason I won't come out and say certain things in public. Do YOU want the responsibility if somebody has their system screwed up IF they didn't follow instructions precisely? Much like you reverted back before noting the issues you still had. If others do things like you did and changed things without knowledge I will NOT be responsible for the machine. LadyH knows of the options she has and she and I (much like you and I earler) noted this via PMs. If someone just comes on who is inexperienced and starts doing things and misses even ONE note, that could screw up the system and I'm not going to go to somebody's home to fix what was not done properly, nor take responsibility for such actions done without supervision.

You are also mistaken about my vast research in regard to drivers. I have tested this with MANY systems, and not just the three I have at home. I've taken many different hardware configurations that had various nVidia cards before making my statements. If you'd like I'll provide links of other such systems who heeded my advice and proven it right, but note they are NOT on this forum, so I won't note them in public as I believe this to be against Sunflowers' policies.

Medieval 2, I have not received yet but soon. In my condition shadows have always been the biggest draw on resources for any game out, and I always turn them off myself and turn ALL else to max and have no lag on my higher-end card. The lower-ended cards, have to be tweaked properly. So, I won't argue with you on M2, until I can verify it for myself. Take your gripes elsewhere as this forum is for HELPING, not rebuking or taking a condesending view unless YOU can prove yourself to be right I'm willing to take odds, I've put in a hell of a lot more time and effort than you, just for the benefit of both myself and others, and use caution what advice I will give out in public.

Sincerely,
Phil

To your first quesiton, never had it happen to me, but many on other forums. Will provide links by PMs. Not only RAM strips, but GPUs, harddrive chips and like. Will provide once found if desired.

Not talking processes or service but background programs (not noted via task manager, but Statup tab in msconfig). If you can provide snapshots or the list of those, I can better advise. In case you don't know what I mean, go to my Sticky about probelms with the game and follow the second set of instructions. Too many or even one conflict can be enough.

As to cooling system, noted. No, you SHOULDN'T need more. One question though, do the internal and external fans run every minute the PC is on or by themostats? If by thermostats, I'd bypass and have them on all the time, but that's just my opinion as mine runs as often as my PC is on and I never get over 30C anywhere is the case including our hottest days (we get up to 45C on some occasions) and we don't run the air conditioning often (maybe 2 hours a day when over 40C). Something that won't hurt to try (if possible) is to run the machine with the drawer to the case off. Not advised if you have samll animals in the house unless you can keep them away from the PC. You can even try an exteral stand alone fan blowing into the case to see, but no guarantees. Has helped a few but mostly with ATI cards that are problematic. The highter the demand on the system and components, the hotter it will run, so never underestimate what is possible but note I did say you should not. Does not mean do not if it helps and you can deal with the last options.

Sincerely,
Phil..

How the hell, Phil, would you know how the hell much more effort you've put in than me regarding learning the hell about hellish technical components... LOL. Do you know me? What an accusation- you attack things you don't know... at least I stick to what I see you writing about in this thread.

LOL. "Unless I can prove myself right?" Phil, you've yet to prove yourself right about the driver issue at all. And now, in this thread, you have actually suggested a user place an external fan to blow on their computer running at STOCK speeds after using drivers you yourself have suggested.

And for god's sake, Phil, she changes the drivers (one thing) and notices something has changed... the temps are UP! Now, any good scientist would attribute at LEAST a correlation between the two (if not cause and effect), but no... you blame it on something that has NOT changed since the temps went up: BAD EQUIPMENT from off the shelf OR too many apps running... Say what!?!? That makes absolutely no experimental sense what so ever to anyone who understands cause and effect. Good lord! THOSE weren't the VARIABLES that you CHANGED- she changed the DRIVERS AND TEMP went ++ hm...............

As for not providing information so someone won't hold you responsible? Wow, that is some backward reasoning....

I'll take my gripes where I like, Phil, thanks for the advice. I think they belong here, because I think you are misleading LadyH without really intending to due to your ignorance in basic cause and effect rules- this calls into question your own conclusions from your vaunted (but not documented) "extensive testing" you have done... where is it published!? In even some forum where other techies go like sharkyextreme!? Anandtech? I hang out there... why don't you post your results there? See what some real techies think about it...

Ah well, it's entertaining.

Keep tinkering with your computer, lady H... my money is on the following results for this thread and LadyH:
She reverts to the latest WHQL certified drivers, cleans up a few background apps running that don't need to, makes a few graphic setting adjustments in the game, close up your case, and eventually forget all about the wild goose chase occurring here.

But this will take a year of posts exchanged back and forth between Phil and her. :bday:

and what exactly does this mean:
"so never underestimate what is possible but note I did say you should not. Does not mean do not if it helps and you can deal with the last options."

I can't make heads or tails of this syntax... what!? I like the "does not mean do not" part the best, sounds like a good song title by Ringo Starr... or maybe Yoda talking! :D

Forgive for being so bold to start.

Terrifying thread.

I just ordered the game yesterday (will have to wait 5-9 bd for it).

Now I hope that it will run on my system, or be able to get it to run without screwing up my other games (yes, I play many concurrently).

I don't know anything about optimizing my system. Apparent by the size of the "page file" .

I could not find anywhere for certain if my video card had "2.0 pixel shader" or not (see system requirements). I think it safe to assume with the one I have it's there (but others with different cards might question it).

I really don't have any problems running high end games*, and don't want to lose one to gain another (*GalCiv2, Civ4, Dungeon Lords, ect..)

SO... I am looking for opinions if 1701 should run fine, or if some tweaks should be made to that end. AND, any other optimization suggestions you might have (and no, I won't expect anyone to come to my house and fix a broke OS.... tho I might come to yours if you give very bad advice  j/k

I feel addicted to the game already, and I don't even have the CD yet. next 9 days of 1602 are going to be interesting.

I know.
If it works, don't fix it. (or)
If it jams, force it. If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway.

Hi zippyriver :halloha:

I think, the game will run fine on your system.
just update the video driver

And your card has got pixel shader 3.0
