I do feel somewhat guilty using this method. It may be cheating but dammit I want my island to be PERFECT and I'll do what I have to do to protect my baby.

I didn't mean to imply 'cheating' - just asking if there was a difference...
Apparently there is none...

If I play with fog on (really hard these days with all the 'stuff' going on @ these forums... ) I don't really care to find the 'perfect' island, just a big island, later, down the road if I don't like my descision I can always 'occupy' another one - be it peaceful or through war... - its an 'endless' game after all

I do feel somewhat guilty using this method. - GOOD, you should...

I don't have 1701 (yet). Got directed here due to "re-visiting" 1602. I feel the same way though. I find using "perfect island" cheats really detracts from the challange. I don't mind if I grab a single 100%, as it makes for more of a challange. Being this is for a players guide (for those using FOW) perhaps some tips on initial exploration/colonization strategies would be in order (and fit into the standards for a guide). Instead of having:

First step: cheat

IE: (if you start out all in a group like 1602) pick and follow one of the AI ships and colonize close to them for easy trading...

(I am not trying to be a critic, and I DO appreciate it when players go through the time and effort to make such a monster. I just want it to be the best it can be. iykwim)

I would really like to see what peoples idea of the best housing plans are, I usually find myself stuck when they start wanting theatres etc, so some good housing plans would be greatly appreciated  especially housing plans for reaching citizenship upwards Pleassssssse

After receiving tools from the free trader mission, I take that to the guy in india and get tobacco for Tatonka, then buy food from Tatonka to trade to the asians for cloth and that goes to the aztec.. The aztec charge more for food than Tatonka it seems..

In this post: Roadrunner showed a plan for a trading route involving all 4 foreign nations..with it you can get a good reputation with all of them:

just click on the numbers to get a plan..unfortunately also in German..so if you need to know some translations..pleas ask again :go:

unfortunately it is in German, so here is the translation (you can still click the image added in the Post from Roadrunner to get the impression:

iroquois: --> food
<-- tabaccos

aztecs: <-- cloth

indians: --> tabaccos

asians: <-- food
--> cloth

in which "-->" means "buy" and "<--" means "sell"

There are also some building maps from different user:

just click on the numbers /representing the amount of house build in the different plans under certain conditions. The plans are also in German, so if you need help with translations, please ask :go:

"some snipped"

Here is a bit more information:

Every colonial will:
1) buy one and sell two resources the moment you sign a trade agreement.
2) buy one and sell one additional resource the moment you are on friendly (green) terms.
3) sell one additional resource if you've signed a fraternization pact with them. But you may do that with only ONE of them at a time.

The goods they offer change only based on the above conditions. The actual resources themselves do not change.

The goods are:

Iroquois
1) Sell Food, Sell Wool, Buy Tobacco
2) Sell Horses, Buy Weapons
3) Sell Furs

Indians
1) Sell Tobacco, Sell Bricks, Buy Tools
2) Sell Gems, Buy Lamp Oil
3) Sell Ivory

Asians
1) Sell Wood, Sell Cloth, Buy Food
2) Sell Blossoms, Buy Chocolates
3) Sell Jade

Aztecs
1) Sell Wood, Sell Food, Buy Cloth
2) Sell Gold, Buy Horses
3) Sell Talismans
For what it is worth.

Guys... thanks awfully for all the great hints you've all given me...
now just a few WARNINGS would go well too.... :nono:

for instance... nobody told me that when you reach higher levels that awful queen comes and demands money off you *grrr*
and those damn Aristos... *ugh* rioting over firs? come on!!!! how are you supposed to keep up with a supply that doesn't exist or depletes faster than you can fetch it???

This is so not fun now :bawling:

:

The merchant has it! all you have to do is to buy it in EACH of your harbors then bring it at home. Its called "passive trading" The aristos pay enough money to supply it.

And dont worry about queen, she will never ask more money than you have.

We didn't want to spoil your fun!

Start buying colonial goods earlier in the game. Don't store them on your main island, or cut off to merchants.. Supply to merchants to upgrade to aristocrats then cut off to merchants again..

I think the trick is to stay at an early level until you have a good amount of coin. (100,000)
I never upgrade to aristocrats until i have close to 200,000 in coin, and all satallite island warehouses full of colonial goods.

Perhaps you are saying that it is better to view the game as a steady, sane pace of building and development; rather than a head-stong, mad dash to 'up-grade' all to the Aristocrat level?

I never had thos colonial goods problem...ok..I only have about 4000 aristos to get all the buildings..but you can achieve enough colonial goos, just by doing the jobs, the free trader offers you and buy from the native cultures....and if that is not enough..buy at your own warehouse...

elsker_soz
05-03-2007, 23:20
well I guess the truth is that I only have 2 problems..

1. I didn't read enough about what happens in the game - research

and

2. I didn't plan ahead enough.

so when I did get the Aristo's quite by accident... and I let them grow at their own pace, I wasn't prepared for their demands, I was more concerned with how to reach the number required than how to care for them...

I know this now and am planning ahead and doing the resarch and not allowing growth beyond what I can handle :go:

so now lets see if I can play this game  (note I didn't say master the game)

Firs are harvested by the wood cutters on northern islands.

(ducks, runs, hides).

I will have to try buying those early bricks. Will have to re-write my notes tho. I like to be self-sufficient asap though, so my notes reflect that. They are almost ready for posting.

Archilochus, don't that housing pattern give you problems with firhouse and school placement? I know you need 65 houses eventually, but I wait a while before putting that many down.
