Excellent start Thanks Dobber!

Since there was no mention of it, I assume these startup suggestions hold true for all difficulty levels up to pioneer level?

Yes, with the exception of hard level, the expansion to other islands would be left off at this stage in hard. No need to antagonize the AI at the early stage of the game. Maybe I should go back and state they are for Easy and Normal. Hard is a totally different beast!

Hopefully in the next few days I will be able to add in the other population levels. I want to take a trip back into the game with a new gamestart and make sure I don't overlook anything!

Thanks Dobber for this great guide !

Im learning so much about the gameplay on this forum, it really has made my Anno 1701 experience much more enjoyable
( i read deejoo s guide in the german section which also helped a great deal)

Keep up the great work it is appreciated :go:

Great start! How about eventually a 'Tech-Tree' that shows everything you need to move on to the next level for your population (maybe also everything available to build at each level). It would help with the planning for the lay-out of your city. You know, like back in the 'old days' when game companies used to include a nice shiny stand up card with everything at your fingertips. Well, you asked for suggestions...

Thanks for the input, Warmskin! I will keep it in mind! I think maybe I will spend a bit more time on the guide and include some things I hadn't thought of doing before your suggestion! Definitely must get in the game and get some screenshots!

Could be a very nice thread Dobber :go:

But one thing: you should really add some pictures. Because without it is not really nice to look at and read it

Maybe you could take the pictures out of my translation thread  and if you are finished, let my translation go to bed

There is a lot I could do with pics, I wonder how many pics the free image hosting sites allow you to upload?

I also have had an invitation to Windows Office Live, the Basic version is free and gives me my own free domain name, free hosting, domain name branded email addresses(up to 25 addresses) 500 mb of storage space and web design tools. Maybe I should take up the offer, then I could store all the pics I needed!

...
Do you mean imageshak? There you can upload as many as you want :go:
As far as i know...

And if you register there (for free), you can manage your pictures at every time. Because you get a link, where all your pictures are saved :go:

I hope i wrote this clear enough
edit: if it's not clear write a PM

I am registered at imageshack and have 24 pics uploaded there already.

I didn't know if they had a limit or not!

Sometimes it pays to do a little investigating, doesn't it? :duh:

Sweet guide, Dobber.

After receiving tools from the free trader mission, I take that to the guy in india and get tobacco for Tatonka, then buy food from Tatonka to trade to the asians for cloth and that goes to the aztec.. The aztec charge more for food than Tatonka it seems..

Or I just go and buy the tobacco to complete the trade circle!
The brick purchase from india sure helps too. :go:

I enjoyed reading your pioneer guide. I use a similar tactic when I begin a game except that instead of exploring the map with my ship I buy the full map from the free trader and look it over for the best islands and the ones that I want to colonize first. Then I restart. Not only to get my money back but so in my actual game the map can be unveiled in a more "natural" fashion.

That would be quicker, I hadn't thought of that! :go:

But that would also be expensive.

For me is that no solution

huh???..
if this is how you play with fow 'on', what is the sense of having it turned on in the first place??? - am I missing something???

When you restart using the save you made at first, you have your money back and you know which area of the map contains the island you want.

I always start with a revealed map myself, but perhaps you might wish to use the FOW but still have a heads up on which island you wish to have. Revealing by exploring or buying the full map and then restarting from the save game would reset the FOW and allow you to get that island but would also prevent you from seeing what the AI was doing until you did reveal the map while playing.
