Hm, the second could be related to auto-saving... maybe a problem with the user-rights leaving the game not allowed to overwrite existing (auto)save-files?

If you save manually and use a new name for the savegame-file everytime thus not overwriting existing ones, does that work?

No Bull, you aren't the only experiencing this problem, as the others have had it rectified. Sounds to me like you could have overheaitng problems (but a guess right now). Many of the higher-end ATI cards have this problem, especially on games that tax the video card as heavily as this game does.

So, I'd open the case to check for dust first thing (as dust can not be kind to your PC if there is some). If so, clean it out. Then (with the case open) turn on the PC and check to make sure all the fans are running and properly. If one or more is not, you need to replace it. Check the temperature of the cabinet and components as well. If getting too hot, you might need to install an internal cooling system or circulating fan. You can try running the game with the case open and even put an eteranl fan next to it blowing into the case.

See if any of these resolve the isssue. If so, it is overhearing and you need to adjust the airflow or move the case to where it can get more ventilation or keep the noted being done when playing. Keep us posted and good luck!

Sincerely,
Phil

Nope, already tried that, it didn't work. It gave that runtime error again.

My pc has a good airflow, one 120mm fan in the front and one 120mm fan in the back. I dust it out every month and clean the dust filter in the front.

There is a Zalman VF900-cu on the graphicscard and keeps it at 80C max under load so that's ok. Also have a CNPS9700 LED on my CPU that keeps it at 45C max under load so the overall temps are good.

It's windows/driver/game/copy protection related and it's going to be tough job to find out what the exact cause is.

Besides that, I have no problems playing other games, like Company of Heroes, C&C 3, Neverwinter Nights 2 and Oblivion, it's only Anno 1701 that gives me a almost headache.

Since you noted it seems to be a copy-protection issue, I have to ask. Did you download and install the 64-bit version of Tages (since you're running Vista)?! That might relieve the copy-protection problems if this is what it is. You'll just need to do a forum search for it unless somebody provides the link for you.

Sincerely,
Phil

OK, still being it's Vista, most likely you might need to "play" with the video settings. The Blue and Green to be noted is one. As noted, the game was not optimized or designed with Vista, so you might need to spend time tweaking until you find the rigth "happy medium". All I can offer as copy-protection I don't mess with as I'm only a troubleshooter and not a programmer. Good Luck!

Phil

All I can say is the game was not designed to be run on Vista, and Vista is not supported. Maybe the expansion will be optimised to run on Vista as well as XP!

Phil Walker
14-05-2007, 06:09
True and as noted, Dobber. We also can make no guarantees, but do our best to get it running on these non-supported systems as no game written up to this point has been supported or optimzed either and I run into this on other forums as well Most can get it to at least work, but Vista is far from being bug-fee as has also been noted as well.

Sincerely,
Phil

He does mention that this happens on his Windows XP too though. And his friends windows xp so I guess it aint a Vista specific problem...

Ok, two things:

1: The game will most likely crash when I save a game for a second time and gives a C++ runtime error during saving.

2: The game gives a C++ runtime error after the screen turned blue when I was playing for atleast 2 hours.

These are the two problems that i'm facing. I didn't experience the 2nd problem before because I only played for an hour or so until now.

btw; it's strange that i'm the only one that is experiencing this problem.

You're not the only one though. I've seen the same problem on my girlfriends computer. Haven't found any solution to it so far..

If you bothered to read all that was said, you'd note that the DxDiags were not provided on the other PCs either. More than likely one (in particular) had Daemon Tools as he did also, and that would be problem enough. Love how these "know it alls" don't read or won't accept the fact that Vista is not only far from bug-free, but also not supported by this and most other games. Not to mention that DX10 is missing files that DX9 games (and other applications) require to run properly and why it is suggested to also download and install a later (this year) version of DX9. You want help?! Provide what is needed or say no more.

Phil

eh.... whoa, what an answer. Sorry if my post wasn't on the spot.
I was just pointing out something that he said in the earlier post and maybe we should ask him to post dxdiag from the xp aswell.
I have in fact read all the posts as I'm trying to fix the same problem myself.

And, yes I know that Vista aint bug free... But why not try to focus on the xp aswell? He does mention the problem on one Vista and on two Xp's.

Btw, do anyone know if Anno was developed with the Visual Studio 2005? I had a similar problem with an application I wrote at work in the new enviroment, it worked fine in my VS2005 enviroment. But not on an xp I had. I fixed it through installing a vs2005 package from MS. Maybe you can get Anno to work on your xp through the same method, Bull. The package can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=32BC1BEE-A3F9-4C13-9C99-220B62A191EE&displaylang=en

Don't worry about it, show us your dxdiag and we'll help you too.:smile2:

I did say we would need to see the DxDiags (and most likely bakcground program) of the other PCs, but not seen yet. Once seen, then will advise.

If you'd provide what is needed as noted, we can see if we can help speed up the process for you as we are here to help, as Rnett noted, whether supported or not, but make no guarantees.

As to VS2005, I couldn't say as I'm only a volunteer and just know what is supported. That you'd have to get form one of the development staff, but my guess (and only a guess) would be no.

Phil

I'll post it later. The problem isn't on my computer (Anno work fine on mine..). Its on my girlfriends pc and she's playing Vanguard atm. :-)

She's got an Vista 32 though. I haven't found any solution yet and have tried a lot of options. I too suspected the Vista first, but as Bull here mentioned that he had seen the problem on a couple of xp's I became interested.

This error message do appear on both systems and on different applications (not only Anno..). Whats annoying is that Microsoft blames the developers and the developers blame Microsoft. Thats why I was a bit appaled at the answer I got... but no hard feelings I guess...

D

I guess you're right about the VS 2005. Its pretty new and I guess the game would be made for DX10 if they had 2005...

The version has little to do with it and the possibilities are endless, so we'll be waiting for the file and maybe background programs list (and not processes from Task Manager but from Startup of msconfig).

As to the "blame game", I'm not surprised at that either. I've spent numerous hours on the phone with MS and software/hardware companies and none are free from blaming the other and not acception what could be "in their own back yard". We'll see what can be done, and know I'm not one to give up easily.

First of all, the diag text and startup list is taken from a Norwegian version of Vista. If you need anything translated just ask and I'll help :-)

The DxDiag reports DX 10. But I have installed DX 9 as well.

I've tried several NVIDIA drivers, the one installed now is the latest beta driver.

I've tried to adjust the graphics setting in the game, just in case it was a heat or power problem. The pc is very well cooled and have a really good powersupply. With more than enough power delivered on the 12v etc.

I've tried the registry settings you have suggested in other threads, the user running the game is an administrator though.

And I've tried to update the copy right program (don't remember the name, but it has been suggested on this forum before..)

I've also tried adjusting the startup apps. I've tried to turn off the ones marked with a star in front. It didn't help

Startup applications from msconfig:
*Windows Defender
*P17 AudioControlX2 Module
*Creative Updreg
*AVG Anti-Virus system
*Java(TM) Platform SE 6 UI
*NVIDIA Driver Helper Service, Version 158.24
*NVIDIA Compatible Windows 2000 Display driver, Version 158.24
*NVIDIA Media Center Library
Operativsystemet Microsoft Windows

I haven't tried to turn off the UAC yet. Don't like to turn it off. And I don't think it is the source of the problem.

The reason is that the problem seems to be linked to multiplayer.
We usually see the problem when we play against each other, can't really remember seeing it in singleplayer mode. I don't think its linked to the auto save either as the problem won't appear until the autosave have run several times.

I've also tried to reinstall the game from scratch.

And ofcourse the game is patched with the latest patch, same with windows.

One more info. The pagefile's maximum size is set to 3500. The one in the report is the current size.

Beta video drivers  ?! That is part of your problem right there. Use the nVidia approved from HERE (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_158.18.html) and follow the instutions in my nVidia Sticky to uninstall that beta junk and install the approved and better drivers properly.

Next, increase your pagefile to 4096 in both as it's not enough with as much of a resource hog as Vista is.

Diconnect that stinking mic at least while playing as most games don't do well with any add-ons that are not required. Same with that USB adapter and plug the needed devices into the ports directly. If you don't have enough, only then you can skip it on the USB adapter. This is all in your file anyway and these alone can cause these errors as runtime errors are generic for the most part.

However, runtime errors are also often due to background conflicts and I see one right away. So, only keep these; Your AVG Anti-Virus and the NVIDIA Compatible Display Driver X (X - version number) program. That is it! So, run the program again, uncheck all not listed, click Apply, click Close.Close all windows save the pop-up that appeared after closign msconfig and click the Restart button on that window. You will reboot. Upon reboot and getting back onto the account, put a check in the Do Not show me this again box, and click the OK button. Once all the above are done, try the gema then and let us know how it goes. Good Luck!

Last note, good you have the DX9 version and know of the graphic issues, but you might need to tweak both the system and in-game as well once all of this is done to get the best you can as Vista is not setup up and most will need to be truned down if not off. My Best!

Sincerely,
Phil

I've tried both with beta and without. I think I've tried most drivers from Nvidia for Vista. None of them did any difference. The last beta one seems to be the best one so far though (for other games..).

I've tried most of the other things you suggest too. The only thing I haven't tried is to increase the swap file even more. I'll do that.

I think I'll try to disable the UAC too... :-(
