View Full Version : Open KoH Pak files with KoH PakMan
I have made a program for opening the game's pak-files and want to make it public today. I guess now after the first patch has been released, the urge to modify the game has decreased a little, but of course, there's still a lot of room for modding. :)

The program hasn't been tested yet by anyone but me, so it's possible that it still has flaws. Please consider that (and make backups).
For more information about that issue -> readme.txt
For a short user's manual -> readme.txt
For questions -> Please see readme first, then post here or write a PM.
Praise and thanks -> post here or PM.
Rantings, flamings and harsh critics -> e-mail to Nil@Void.com :p
It's mentioned in the readme file, but to make sure that it comes to everybody's attention:
Use this program at your own risk. I can not be held responsible for any damage to your computer resulting directly or indirectly through the use of my program.
Have fun.

i rearange build tree (market is upgrade from tax collector)
how to pak files back into defs.pak and europe.pack (stupid question i know)?
anyway thanks again man
Good work Tempest :)
To test anything you do not need to insert files back to the .pak file. It works like that - If some file is available (in appropriate folder, with approriate na me) outside of the .pak file, the game will use it from outside instead of reading from the .pak. I.e. the files outside are "overriding" the files inside.
What you do when the file to be inserted is larger than the file already inside?
Good work Tempest :) What a nice compliment from Master Frujin. :)

What you do when the file to be inserted is larger than the file already inside?PakMan rewrites the file header and those 14 bytes long prefixes which contain the size of each entry. So it doesn't matter if the replacement file is longer or shorter than the original... at least not for the integrity of the file. Why, can that cause any trouble for KoH? I didn't encounter any on testing...
I have found a small glitch and fixed it. Actually you can't even call it a bug, really. It's just that in version 1.00, the "Read me"-Button stops working after a Pak is loaded.
Apparently nobody clicks it, so you wouldn't have noticed, but still. :)
The flaw has been repaired, hence the version number increases to 1.01.
If you have downloaded the file already, you definitely don't need to do so again, since no major things were changed. Just for your information.

Great tool! but i need help editing the units.txt under defs.pak. The file is a little weird, values in wrong places, no defence for some heavy armored units etc :bconfused. I need to add some attack and defence to the teutonic knight and make it even slower, but the file is a little weird, help
Try not to edit the units.txt, but units.xls (Excel Worksheet). I haven't tried it myself, but read about it in another thread. Looks like it's important to edit it with Excel, not with some standard ASCII editor.
Besides, to see the values in units.txt properly, you have to turn word wrap off.
About the teutonic knight's speed, I think that value is actually in "teutonic champion.unit".
Sure you want them even slower? :)

Ok, now ive tried editing units.xls and saving&importing it, no changes can be found ingame, ive also tried saving it to units.txt, and the same with units.txt to units.xls, nothing helps. :bash: . :bawling:
so, try to find out, in which other files unit abilities are shown.
Or if you changed more than one thing, try only one first and then more and more...

As I point out in the readme.txt, KoH falls back to the info found in the the pak files if your modified files are corrupt. Restore the originals and try again. Make sure to use the correct programs (Excel for xls, an ASCII editor for txt) and that your alterations are valid.
Edit Unit.xls and then export it as tab separated text file over units.txt
The game reads from units.txt
Frujin, can you reveal, how to edit realm shapes?
As far as I know realms.bmp in europe.pak\politmap is not enough and I don't want to see what I have seen after that again

Thanks a lot Tempest for this stuff. I will test it this week-end (so many things to do before).
Elvain .. realm shapes are a bit more difficult. You have to use map editing tool.

[COLOR=Lime]Ok have Had a go at the changes Elvain sent me on Bringing England together.
And it works ok, thanks Elvain.
But feel It would be better for the game designers to put this right, haveing had lots of problems getting the game working properly.
Had to Uninstall and reinstall game quite a few times, after messing up  .
Not very good at this type of changeing, and do not like messing with game's, in this fashion.
Would rather leave to the producers to change thease things, and in time I feel they will.
But don't let that stop you fella's, from experimenting.

Really you had it messed up?
I was forced to uninsall and reinstall the game only once, when did many changes at once and backup was messed up (and I didn't create my own :bash: for the first time)
so, I'm gonna send my own mod to Kailes and hope he'll put it somewhere (damn, I'm not very skilled in comps so I would rather leave this to somebody else)
And yes, I agree that developers should think about changes we have made and think about including them into the game... after a looong time, when (if) the next patch wil come
This is a very interesting tool. Thanks for it!
How do u use this pakman tool??? im soo confused helpppp
