Trick or Cheat!

At what point do some or all of the little obscure "tricks" in the game become cheating? Which ones are cheats and which are little known "features"? :bconfused I don't mean to list them here; that would spoil the secrets - I mean in general terms.

What one person considers a feature or trick, another might consider a cheat; and visa versa. What would be a good general rule to distinguish between cheats and features/tricks?

I suppose the "sheep thing" is a cheat: It just seems too easy.;)

I hope this doesn't spark a big arguement! :O

That's indeed a difficult question, and may depend on the situation. In general, I would say that if you can reach the goal you want to achieve also without using that trick, it is cheating. If there is a bug or design error, and you have no other possibility (e.g. in endless games without gold), it is just a trick to continue the game.

Yes. I agree with you both, it depends on the situation.

In this special scenario you can get gold by a regular way.

You only have to think very much. Very (!) much .
As for me ..I used the editor to have a look into the AI's-warehouse to finde the gold. Maybe here it was me who was cheating ... ;)

I think most of us that have been around for some time know cheating when we see it. There are "features" of the game such as f6,f7,shiftf8 or the "3rd. tool trick" from "Friends" that are not cheats. When someone fills thier warehouse with what they need by pressing a few "magic" keys or they pull cannons out of thier butt when they don't even have ore that's a cheat!

Well, Terry, I have been looking at Webi's thread/poll on Turkey and the EU and thought that I should follow the example of the Admin!:D

Some cheats are obvious, but a trick like the "3rd tool" thing might be considered a cheat by some people. I think even you, Terry, told me that if I used that feature to get cannons, it would be cheating.;) In fact in "Friends", I did use it to get cannons!;)

(BTW, I never did finish "Friends". I just recently started it up again!:D)

@Dobber: Frieden created the "Friends" scenario, available at the anno-pool, for his contest a year ago. It's an excellent, very challenging scenario. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't tried it before. I also highly recommend it to those such as our fearless moderator who has never completed it.

I wonder if Frieden still has the savegames from the contest entries from then?

They are still available for download. I downloaded several of them but have not looked at them yet.

And Eric it is not much of a secret, I went to the old board and found the thread from the contest and read all 14-15 pages of posts and now know the answer to my question, along with a lot of strategy for playing the scene.

this is a fact. for all games. doesn't apply to mods of any sort.

if the creators of a game put the "cheats" in the game, they are a feature! if a 3rd party program is doing things, it is a cheat! if you edit things like the dat file in 1503, it is a hex edit. so the ctrl alt shift W 2061 thing is NORMAL. it is a FEATURE OF THE GAME. nothing is interfearing with the game to make it funny. the sheep to gold is eather a bug, a glich, or a easter egg! if you edit the hard coded files of the game, it is a cheat and hex edit! ok?

all the cheats that revold the 2061 box are features!

They are in there for testing purposes. They allow someone to test the games quickly. Are you Testing the game or are you Playing the game?

Each day I try to improve my english. For example by reading the Posts of the english-speaking members.

The translation of the most singular words is only a small problem for me.

It is more problematic if I do not understand many (strange-spelled) words. So I cannot understand the sense of your sentence because only a few words are familiar to me :(

I would find it beautiful if I could understand more of your words at first attempt.

@Frieden: Senseless. I have given up on wkw427 completely already several weeks ago and now am ignoring him. He is one of those guys who don´t want to improve their English so they can be understood but instead expect others to invest many hours to deciffer their posts. I think it´s a waste of time reading his posts.

I also have given up on understanding him. He spells so bad that I can't understand his messages and English is my only language. I can figure out the bablefish translations of the German posts easier than his posts. :D
