Hmm... Personally I'm quite conservative and would prefer an adaption as close to the original material as possible. Of couse, you can't make everything in a movie like you do it in a book.

Sadly, it was very long since I read the books, and I don't remember much of details really.

Wouldn't covering all that require RotK to be hours longer? And then it would be so long they'd be forced to break into more parts...

Well, I never expected the movie to be a copy of the book, but I hoped it would be loyal to Tolkien's message and that would portray the victory of men over evil, and the cost of it.

I didn't complain when they left Bombadil out, or the scourge of the Shire, I actually loved the merging of Arwen and Glorfindel into one character, I didn't exactly like the elves in Helm's Deep, but I thought it was not that bad, and I never really understood the character of Gollum until I saw the movies.

The extended editions for the 2 first movies are absolutely awesome, but I fear the 3rd movie its beyond repair. They cannot erase all that greenish stuff and give us back our victory. :D

Moral of the story? Never read books!!! :D

Frankly I don't care about the books. This is a movie. Peter Jackson never said that the movies will follow the story of the book step by step.
I love the movies and I love the books. Different? Who the hell cares? :p

Siegebreaker - I agree with one point - the Undead Army entering Minis Tirith was badly done (IMHO), but the other points you make are minor. Of course PJ has changed things - that is why the film has been so successful. If he had stuck to the book it would be the slowest, weakest movie of all time. I love the book, but I understand that film and book have to change - that's why nearly every story is changed for film. It is for an entirely different audience and it has to maintain a certain pace and have certain "phases" that a book is not constrained by.
If the purists want a film of the book - including a cinematic version of a boring song on every other page, and the incredibly dull history that you can only really read in the Silmarillion, then they should not watch the film.
I have read the book many times, I have written essays on it but, quite frankly, I would never have believed that anyone would make a film of LOTR that I would love in my lifetime, but they have.
Anyone that expects a direct translation of the books - is going to be disapointed

Even if "purists" like me are a minority, what I would personally prefer the movies to be like doesn't change with the will of the majority. Of course there won't be a high budget movie of the books that follows the story to the letter, but that doesn't change the fact that it would be what I would prefer.

And some things were changed more in the movie adaption than was neccesary. If I had read the books recently I would probably think it was worse done. Don't get me wrong, I like the movies, but certain details could have been better done, and more to the letter.

No, the third part not. Almost all movies here are released only with subtitles and it take some time to make it....
So all people here have to wait...

Well in Holland it was allready on the 17th of December...also with subtitles....

Subtitles are good!!! Better then in Germany or France....were you have to listen to the German or French voices....no wonder they can't learn English there....

Yeah, dubbing ****s. We almost never have it, except for child movies. Personally I think all translations ****, that's why I like the DVD versions as well, so I can watch them without subtitling whatsoever.

Hmm, we used to have premieres later than US here as well, but lately they have started to premiere the movies sometimes at the same time as they do in the US. I guess it's a way to fight counterfeit copies. Atleast something good comes of that piracy.

I think that is awesome that a british writer can influence american producers who then influence the whole world with one of the greatest movies ever made, not to mention the fact that the book has been re written in every language in the world just four years after it was published.

Aragorn ROCKs!

i did a LOTR marathon with some friends 2 weeks ago. We watched the extended versions of parts 1 and 2 on DVD, and then went to see part 3 in the cinema at night. Great stuff!

About this last film; i thought it was great! Absolutely one of the best movies i've ever seen. And that goes for the whole series.

The one (and only) thing i was dissapointed about was the end. In my opinion it was too long. There are 3 or 4 moments where you think its gonna end, and it still goes on.... Well the ppl who saw it probably know what i mean. ;)

Altogether it was great though. now i'm gonna wait for the DVD release...:D

Yeah. In Bulgaria there was a marathon with the first two parts (extented) and the third on 26 December. I was there :D and they also gave us a book with the map of the Middle Earth and food & drink.
