Many americans poor in geograhy, so they probobly will not find Belgium. Or even "what that?" they will ask:D Don't be that sure. Are Europeans better in it? How many of Europeans know all american states and also where do they lie? How many people from Western europe even don't know where some of eastern european states are?
Don't say how do we stay in knowlege of Africa or Asia, it's far worse. (I know, difference between US and Europe is independence of states. But in the time of EU covering most of continent?)Remember looking at problem from both sides...

*not talking about people here, but population in average*

Well, it's kinda normal to not know about the location of every american states. It's like not knowing the location of every canadian provinces(except Québec, of course :)), or the regions of china... But at least, most people should know that the capital of Russia is Moscow and the one of spain is Madrid and that norway is a country of scandinavia.

man, the education system here is so screwed up it's pathetic. Things I've noticed about what people think include: Africa is one whole country, Columbus was the first to discover america, Indians ARE native americans, russia doesn't exist since the berlin wall fell, etc. And geography, it's even worse. ask an average american where Kazakhstan, Finland, Switzerland, Estonia,or Lithuania is, and I bet more than 60% would get it wrong.
