Interesting Question is:
Why are these floods in Europe more often then previously?
climatic change?
bad urbanistic changes in environment?
...?
I think it's caused by many reasons, many of them are rather unknown...
but:
1) climatic changes(natural circulation)
2) bad behaviour towards environment(regulated rivers,
3) too much concrete and asphalt in cities covering very large areas...
4) people build their houses in areas where they never did it(in areas that are being flooded)
there always were floods, but not so massive...

yes you are right in 1, and 4 points,
to second: the rivers were mostly regulated against floods, in history - there were always floods and they were usefull because of soil fertility enhancement. But in many cases this regulation were not done very well, maybe lack of money, hasty work and so on.
to 3: there man has to say, the retention capacity of land was minimised very quick and in large scale,
cause: choping of forest mainly, meadows area decrease, no good drainage system...and so on

I watched the news on CNN today, so the victims of Katerina could be some hundreds
many tornados and hurricans in USA (mainly) in last five years - with power 5.
The scientists said more then last hundred years...
hm it is saying someting, but the americans are still deaf and did not attach to international environmental protocols..
the nature is more dangerous than terrorist...
the nature is more dangerous than terrorist...
I agree with this 100%
but they still prefere anti-environmental policy in economical development, are blind to the fact that natural diseases cause much larger and wider damage in USA than terrorists.
If they would spend half of anti-terrorist military expenses on dotations of "ecological industry", it would make Americans much safer.
but many politics consider ecological activists the same as terrorists  our president even call them "ecological terrorists"(well, some really are, but how can anybody compare Greenpeace with Al-Qaeda? I think that saving the world from ecological catastroph is something diferent than one's religious fanaticism)

hm I do not like greenpeace, they are blind too...I'm not only for ecological solutions of problem, but to find a compromise...between ecological and economical...
e.g. GM crops, Nuclear energy, ...

I don't like them either, I used them just as example of ecological organisation. I know they are kind of fanatics too...
the compromise is the only solution... destroing industry is not the way(if people would return to the cages, it would be much worse ecological catastroph), the bad and environment-destroying must be replaced by more expensive, but "ecologic", so the governments should dotate those who prefere alternative sources of energy and "ecologic industry"

Everyone needs an enemy. That is especially true for american governments (note: not always, though quite often). But the fact is that when you try to minimize the victims of natural disasters you have to work together with nature - not against it.
That is why it's far easier to battle terrorists than natural disasters. You can show pictures of them in TV and say "This is the enemy. He is bad." and the people will believe it just as they do today, as they did before, and as they will in future.

I thing it is only a question of priorities...and we ,people, are very stupid...
So until now, the nature was adopting the conditions coming from people, but I think, this is changing very dramatically and we will accept and adopt the condition created from nature present and in the future

So, people, what do you think of that bird influenza? It's not a catastrophe yet, but it's pretty... hmm... dangerous. So far it's only in Romania, Turkey and Greece, whereas the results from Greece aren't ready yet to tell if it's the deadly H5N1. "Fortunately" for us, Bulgaria's still save - the weather to the north's quite warm and the birds from Romania are still in the Danube delta and are expected to enter Bulgarian territory not earlier than the middle of December. The bird-stream from Turkey has passed to the warmer Greece. Plus Euro-experts have already arrived here and precautions are very high, especially in the bird farms. One even said on the news: "The hygiene in the farms is usually like in a hospital (because of EU demands) and now it's absolutely sterilized" and only the people's personal birds (hens and such) could get the influenza out on the open yard. But still, the situation is critical - all the histeria, the rising prices... Only the pharmaceutical companies would win something from this...
