@grandpa: Just build the shipyard first (click on the shipyard building icon and move the mouse along the shore), and then add an additional market place. It's the same as with the warehouse: you cannot build it everywhere - maybe there is a piece of road or an inappropriate part of the coast which prevents you from building it.

I would not build the deep ore mine if there are Free Traders on the map: They will sell you iron ore for $68 or less per ton...

Well I put the shipyard next to the warehouse and there is a road behind. According to what I have read here I need space that is 3 fields wide and 2 deep, so I will have to put it further down the shore. I just thought it would be nice if the small trading ships went to the production islands for the tobacco and spice. Now, how do I setup a trading route? As for the ore mine-can I put one up on one of my production islands instead of buying it from the freetraders? I also offloaded some tools onto my ship as I don't know how to store them elsewhere.

Better use small war ships instead of small trading ships - they are faster.

Concerning the trading routes, check your manual (probably a *.pdf file on your game CD) or look here: http://www.capsu.org/1602/3.html#gp_6_1

You can of course set up a new mine at another island. However, I prefer buying iron ore from the Free Traders. It's a bit more expensive, but much more convenient: If you do not count the building material for the mine, 1t of iron ore from your mine costs you $56 - and $68 or less if you buy it from the Free Traders.

I didn't know it cost that much to produce iron ore! I often buy ore for 44 or 45. Remember "Fourty-four for iron ore".

I calculated that for a small iron ore mine (as grandpa does not have access to the deep one yet) on the basis of Charlie's data (1,4 t per minute, 80t of iron ore, $1000 building costs and $60 maintaining costs per minute). You need 58 minutes to empty the mine, i.e. $3480 maintaining costs (plus the building expenses of $1000) to get 80t of ore... Charlie calculated production costs of $43/t, but that means that the building costs are not counted.

BTW I also did not count the costs for bricks, tools, and wood - but if I do that, I get even more interesting results: For a small ore mine, you need 10t tools, 20t wood, and 5t bricks. Counting the production costs provided by charlie, tools cost $44,3/t, bricks $1,7/t and wood $1,8/t (the building costs for their production need not to be taken into account). That means, you would have to add $486 to the building costs - and that means that one ton of iron ore costs you even more: approx. $ 60,1/ton.

But... in the beginning, you do not produce tools on your own, you have to buy them. If you are lucky, you'll get them for $70/t which will increase the building material costs to $ 743. So, iron ore from your first mine costs you $ 65,3 per ton.
