A 56k modem transfers 7 kbytes/second...
Mine hardly gets at 5kb/s. And the box said it was a 56k modem...

One byte is 8 bits.
56kbits / 8 -> 7 kbytes
If the modem reaches it's physical maximum depends on the provider, the local infrastructure, the quality of the line to the host, etc. etc.

I agree. The numbers I posted where averages when that is all taken into account, based on my own experience.
Technically a 100Mb per second network can transfer 100Mb a second = 102,400Kb per second = 12,800KB per second
So if the uni uses the maximum network it should be 200x faster than broadband!
But it is actually between 5x-20x faster so I guess the networks backbone connection is utilising it as well as it can consdiering it has about 1000 PC's!
Here endith the geek lesson! :silly:
I must say I am surprised at the number of Cable modem users on tis forum!
In the UK Cable is a very small percentage.
In the US cable is becoming cheaper than dialup, when I got cable I dropped dialup and a phone line and saved $15.00 a month.
Cable is comparable in price to DSL, but much faster connection.

2789.2 Kbps on cable (:
You guys over in America have access to better facilities than over here in Britain. I have just moved over to Broadband and get about 500Kbps and that is pretty good for over here.
2789.2 Kbps on cable (:
That is one mean connection! We would have to pay a fortune to get that in the UK.
