No need to be :nono: - you've got plenty of time...one day, who is to know...
Nah, not really. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to afford a boat anytime... I'm just not that type of person. And if I could afford one I'd probably not have time for it. Maybe when I retire...
Another problem is that I can never decide what kind of boat I want. I'd prefer one that's as traditional as possible, mostly wood etc. But those are typically difficult to sail, at least with few (or maybe just one?) person. And they are typically not really suitable for long distances. And then I'm a ****er for square rigged ships. I just can't help it. It's not that I don't like Schooners or Ketches or Yawls and the like, but I just love them yards. And it's pretty much impossible to find a boat with at least one yard and still be able to sail it alone.
Well, you can see I'm quite picky when it come to boats.
So, for the time being I guess I'll stay confined to sailing on friends ships or tall ships once in a while. I wish I lived by the sea, then I'd get a chance to sail much more often. Like this it's always a huuuge trip to get anywhere near a boat even and then the actual sailing must be worth it too. Theres no point traveling two days for one day sailing...
Okay, I'll stop now. I just can't help it when it comes to sailing.
Hehehe - been there, done that...
What do you think took me 20 years...
I finally 'compromised' on what you saw below
I do admit its a long and painful process (especially the 'picky' part), but in the end its really worth it - the feeling of being 'out there' is second to none...
Ooh, just saw your pics...niiiice  - btw no 'firepois' on my boat :nono: (with or without helmet... )
So, what boat was that on and where did you sail???
So it's good I'm off to a more or less early start? Maybe I'll actually get there by the time I retire!
In the end you'll always love your boat, no matter what you'd like to have if you lived in a perfect universe.
So, those pictures were taken on the "Alexander von Humboldt", that barque with the green sails. Those in particular are from a little trip on the North Sea, just some sailing around with no real goal, making the best of the wind. On our way back we stopped on Helgoland for a night. In fact the wind wasn't even that strong, only up to 6 or 7 bft., which is a lot I guess if you are in a small boat but not really much in tall ship. Once we even had barely any wind so you could just jump into the water in the middle of... nowhere. Actually that was a bit creepy, I didn't do that. We also took the dinghies and drove around the actual ship, so I had a chance to make tons of pictures. You an see some of them here: http://www.watersablaze.com/english/gallery/events_sailinggallery.html
Some of those pictures were also taken during the time we were working on the ship in a dockyard.
 Wir haben Bilder von Robo! Wunder geschehen!
C-F: I think I totally forgot to post a pic of the boat I'd have if I lived in a perfect universe:

Hello catt,
this looks like a very nice boat - it also looks like it would be quite a shore to try to upkeep it...
In general, wooden boats are hard to beat in 'classic' and 'beauty' and while it is ok for the 'colder' regions (baltic sea, north sea, etc.) I came to find out that they also have BIG problems in 'warmer waters' - the little critters that like the taste of wood being one of them...
Mine being made of steel, has its fair share in upkeep also, but I found it to be more suitable for the areas I'm interested in - I hate being cold...:nono: - as I said virtual reality becomes reality if/when you are willing/able to compromise for the 'right' reasons...
btw, respect, traveling the North Sea, actually requires some skill...:go:
What is the homeport of the 'big green one'?
I know, that's the problem with wooden boats... It's difficult to maintain it even in colder areas, at least if you have other things to do than working on your boat too. One thing (among others) I really like about this boat is that it's carvel-planked.
I hate being cold too, that's one of the reasons I gave up scuba-diving, at least in Germany (that and security issues).
To be honest if you sail on a tall ship you don't really need any skill, some people leave the ship without even knowing the names of the sails or even what type of ship it is. All they do is running after the person that knows which rope to pull on and doing whatever they say.
That's one reason why I also like working on the ship when it's in a dock, you actually get to see and do a lot of things you'd never have time for during sailing.
The biggest problem is though, that I don't get to do stuff regularly; so I always forget half of the things til the next trip. For example I once made a bunch of splices with some other people (we had made well over one hundred when we were done) but now I wouldn't know how to serve them correctly without looking it up. And the list goes on...
By the way: I'm sorry if I don't use all the correct English words, sometimes it's really difficult to find them. In fact I've started making a little "dictionary" for myself a while ago and although I keep updating it frequently it's nowhere near finished. And it probably never will be...
The home port of the "Alex" is Bremerhaven.
Well, I'm jabbering again...
Ganz genau
In a 'nutshell',
thats why I like my 'own boat' nobody makes fun of me if I don't know the right splice, knott, or name for something...
I decided its like a language, you don't use it, you lose it...but usually you get it back rather quickly.
I prefer 'cruising' over 'sailing'(which normally ends up in regatta racing)
I don't like to spill my drink(s) while sailing, however when @sea, there is absolut alcoholverbot!!!
I like scuba diving - you need it to keep you bottom clean; btw, my son is a divemaster...coming home for semesterferien next week, hehe, got him scheduled to take off about 500kg of shells and barnacles from the rump; psst, he does not know about his 'luck' yet... :hahaha:
Now i'm blabbing...
btw, there are no 'uncorrect' words - only 'commonly used' and not so 'common words' at least in my book...
Your English is better than mine where did you learn yours?
Well, of course no alcohol at sea! No fire either for that part.
You could of course keelhaul the boat, although I'm not sure that word is used in English for something other than the punishment...
No, honestly do you really have that many shells on the hull? We usually don't have that many but that's due to the paint.

I lived in Indiana for a year. And then I have friends all over the USA, so whenever I can afford it I like to go there (mostly California), which admittedly is rather seldom.
All my "nautical English" is from the internet and books though. Never got the chance to sail on a boat whose home port was not in Germany. I once wanted to go on a trip on the Rose, but then 20th Century Fox bought it. I don't know if it'll ever sail again, but even if it does it probably won't be across the Pacific. And they renamed her too. Not good.
Hey folks...although this is is the foto-Thread and we are way off the shore
just my 2 Cents to the sailing topic.....I really envy both of you, who had the possibility to sail....all that is left for me is my passionate reading of Patrick O´Brians novels
(btw: if you want to talk further on this topic, maybe you should open a topic in the Inn..we had there an "Ireland"-Thread for quiet some time...maybe a sailing thread would also be wellcomed...)
And now B2T:
Robo: Du bist nicht süß  zumindest nicht in der gleichen Schiene wie Tala  (Ich nehme mal an, Du verstehst das als Kompliment )...aber endlich wissen wir mal Dein Alter
Sorry, forgot the topic... will do...
