Yep there have been greater empire's then the British empire.

well, don't entirely agree with you on that. I think the biggest empire population- and landmasswise has definately been the British empire. Consider Autralia, India, Middle-East, current US and much, much more.
But after WWII the Brits lost their headstart to the US

Just a little comment to the poll,

The politically correct term for the country bordering Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and the North Sea is The Netherlands and not Holland. Holland is just two provinces of the twelve in total and people from certain provinces don't like to be called "Hollanders". Fortunately I'm from North-Holland, but whenever you meet someone from Limburg I'd suggest you call it the Netherlands or Pays Bas or Niederlände or .............

But what are the requirements for being "the greatest empire"?

Well the biggest factor is being the biggest then your culture how well it is adopted etc.

But Hector you cannot possbly deny that the British Empire was the biggest (as I mentioned before both population and landmass wise). India is definately a big one populationwise (also back then) and Australia os pretty significant landmass wise. I dare say no empire has even been bigger than the British Empire. Considering the culture, well, that's subjective of course, but I don't see any reason why the British Empire would be "culturally less" than the Roman or the Egyptian empire.

This is just a fair guess. If you find flaws in this theory it's because I didn't spend more than half a minute to think about it:
I guess that Hector thinks of "great empires" as outstanding countries which are culturally beyond their time. Like Rome, Egypt and Greece (let's just call it a country for the duration of this post).
But I think the British Empire wasn't really culturally "beyond it's time".
