As I stated earlier, we lived in a rural area. That said, when people from town grew tired of their pets, or the pets grew to be larger than they had expected, or the pets became uncontrollable, they would bring them out into the country and drop them off on a roadside somewhere.
.

Then you should have laws agains that threatment of animals, as we have...by the way I knew from Greece and other southern states, where are a lot of strays, that in only a very few cases there is a danger going out from them..most are harmless..I even fed strays...to kill a vertebrate, without a reason like pain or suffering (or to eat it, as in case of meat production)is strictly forbidden and you can go to jail for that...I still think shooting at animals is only a sign, that you need to solve problemes with a gun, that could also be solved in another way...and that is a principle problem of a society, that has an easy access to weapons.....

I prefer the swedish system ;)

Apparently you have never had to be concerned with being bit by a rabid animal and go through the painful treatment to prevent the disease in your body. We would have our own pets immunized against rabies, but the strays that were encountered, there was no way of knowing if they were immunized. With no animal control to call(this was 25 years ago) you just shot them. If they were dead they couldn't bite you.

No I was never bidden by a straying animal..but we in Germany also imnunize wild animals as foxes to prevent rabbies....

To shoot random at straying animals is unnecessary..a normal animal will not harm you, if it is not attacked..an animal with rabbies will attack you at no reason, so that would be some kind of self defence..but to shoot at animals, you are not sure, if they are infected is some kind of murder..

In Germany, killing a vertebrate without reason is forbidden. A possible illness is (IMHO) not a real good reason...

Well, thatīs exactly what I stated above..

to kill a vertebrate, without a reason like pain or suffering (or to eat it, as in case of meat production)is strictly forbidden and you can go to jail for that...

......maybe I expressed mayself a bit wrong in my last post: I intended to say, that if an animal with rabbies is attacking you, I would say killing it is self defence....to kill an animal with a possible illness I consider as a kind of murder...
