what I mean is the first note about your country. When was the first historical report about German, Danish, Russian and other people in the diffence countries or provinces.
My people has been dated back to the frankish Empire where we feared bye Carl the Great(is that his real name in english?).
The golden periode in Denmark was back in the viking-era and the Kalmar-union, where we ruled over the hole Scandinavia. lol
Back then it was a queen who was the reson of the union af the three nordic countries, Finland, Iceland and Greenland. It only lasted 100 years.

the name austria was first mentioned in written form 996. the roots go back to 955, when hre emperor otto i. founded a "march in the east" (based on an older march founded by charles the great). however, we are more than 1000 years old :bday:
austrias greatest periods are the periods with long time of "peace":
1814 to 1848 (although from about 1830 on no important progresses were made anymore, neither economic nor social, nor military or whatever)
1945 to date
many people think, the best periode of a country is if it had great power and ruled alot of territories. but in most cases this meant war, death, desparation, rapes... :(

that's why the greatest periods of Bohemia/Czechs are the times of especially Václav II.1283-1305 and Karl IV.1346-1378, when Bohemia was both land of peace and law and also had magnificent power (even if during reign of Václav II. there) was far from peace in Poland, where he struggeled long time for crown.
First mention of bohemian Slavs was defeat of Frankish king Dagobertus by Samo's "empire" in 631
Bohemians first mentioned in 805, in 845 14 of their "princes" converted to christianity
Moravians first mentioned in 822

I still couldnt make a clear distingtion between Austrians and German...apart a bit from the way they speak...
How come the two countries have been politically separated throughout all these centuries?

Austria-Hungary was one of the most powerfull nations in Europe before the first World War. In a long period it was even more powerfull than it's enemy prussia.
And because there was no Germany until 1871 they didn't even have the idea to 'unite' ;) . And before Germany was founded Austria-Hungary lost a war against Prussia and had to keep out of the "German Alliance"/"Deutscher Bund" (a first attempt to create something like "Germany", but really nothing concrete).
Long years both nations had more fun killing each other than thinking about a 'political fusion'. In the years before the first World War that changed - with dire consequences.

ohh thats a long story...
but to make it short ... the end of the hre was forced by napoleon. franz II resigned as emperor of the hre. instead he acclaimed himself as austrian emperor.
on the other hand prussia got stronger and stronger during 18. century, although they too lost against napoleon first.
after defeat of bonaparte, the hre was not reinstalled. two powers, prussia and austria fought for the hegemony over the german duchies and other territories. prussia prevailed during 19. century.
after the succesful prussian (together with german territories) war against france 1870/71 the "deutsches kaiserreich" (german empire) was founded. prussian wilhelm i was the first emperor.

edit: im to slow
The canada, "discovered" in 1534, became a real country only in 1867. Since then, the border never changed except for the addition of some british colonies that no one else could have reclaimed. Nothing really special ever happened. Never attacked anyone, never had the need to defend itself. *yawn*. Its only title of glory is to be the second largest country of the world with a huge quantity of ressource, and to be, it seems, a dream country for people living in the third world countries.
And it's cold.
How cold? (Celcius please)

Do you want to compete with him? :D I bet that it is colder in Canada
On the other hand, Sweden is quite big. It reaches to the polar circle :) Probably it gets as cold in Canada as in Sweden
@Vanedor didn't Canada side with the Allied in WW2?

But was far in shadow of the US. Reason is simple, population and economical power is incomparable.
Greatest period of Canada? Gold rush? And actual time. Not strong political influence, but prospering country with no significant threatening by terrorists as in the US
"didn't Canada side with the Allied in WW2?"
Of course, I didnt say we were part in no war, just not directly attacked.
"How cold? (Celcius please)"
Today, it's -23 °Celcius in Quebec City.

Really, that warm in Sweden? Now in Czech rep. is every morning far under -10 celsius.. pretty cold in here. I don't remember Vltava river being frozen...
Well, it's colder more up north I suppose. But we have the Golf stream and global warming, so it doesn't get that cold really. Right now it's perhaps -5 here in Stockholm, we've been down to -10, but just a few weeks ago we were up around 0.

If anyone looks at a map. Scandinavia and Canada is at the same line. But because of the Golf Stream, we in Scandinavia can get a hotter weather.
In the last week the temperature in Sofia was about -10 (Saturday was -13). And we are in the South.
yeah... these years weather ****s :(
