Does the church have any power on kings in the game? The Vatican was a great power controlling countries in the middle age.

Good question. It can be done somehow in game. Probably clerics should negotiate for you as player with Vatican, Caliph or Patriarch of Constantinople

There'll be the pope featuring his own lands and the Caliph will play a role too.

I hope NONE! I was so sick of the church's involvement in MTW. I hope it barely makes an appearance in KOH.

Then i'm affraid that you're going to be VERY sick ;) - coz i think that the church WILL play a somewhat large role in this game.

It'll be better in this game because (I bet):

We can get involved with the church more and manipulate it better- by somehow affecting who is pope and getting him diplomatically on our side.

Diplomacy will be plain better in this game I bet!

And also we have Clerics which, I hope will be Churche's inner diplomats in our services.

Good and realistic medieval strategy can't be without the Church. And without Your(king's) influence on it laso, as much as it can influence you.

In my opinion, it's a very good idea to involve the church. Gives improved depth in the game

I hope this "The pope doesn't want me to spread death amongst my brothers-in-religion" is managed like it was in Europa Universalis II or some equal system. In EUII you could only start a war if you had a reason to do so. At random events you got a war-reason against, perhaps Austria, and then nobody cared if you attack Austria or not. Elsewhise (you declare wars without reason) the chance of rebellions growed and other nations denied alliances with you etc. etc.
So nearly the whole game was about war-reasons. You want to attack france, but you have no reason to do so? Garantee independence to Lorraine. If france attacks Lorraine you'll get your war against the "French war-mongers" :D .
Your daughters might act in a similar way... "France attacks my brothers-in-law? I will defend them! *njehehehe*"

That's the whole problem, in most games the church doctrine was IT! If you went against the pope's wishes then he could ex-communicate your nation and wreak havoc with it.

I think they should avoid it all together. If they don't then they better address all the other religions which will encompasses the entire map. Which is a lot!

Lot?
Paganism, orthodox church and islam. Is that lot?
Maybe shia and sunni islam (sory if bad spelling), but there was nothing more state religion in the area of Europe, northern Africa and near east.

It's not problem of games, but reality. You want rule medieval Europe, you have to deal with papacy...

Ever heard of the reformation? The Vatican played a big role in Europe, but maybe one of the countries can get a Luther to reform the papacy.

The reformation happens wayyyyyyyyy toooooooo lateeeeeeee - if you know your history, you will know that the reformation happens in Denmark in the year 1536 which also btw marks the end of middle age in Denmark !

So no you can't have the reformation !

reformation started in 1517. Is that medieval date? Yes for those, who say that medieval period ends in 1648...

The only medieval reformation was Bohemian hussite reformation...;)

The midieval ends in Denmark with the reformation in 1536 and the introduction of the renaissance time period which last untill around 1620 when the baroque timeperiod starts - i know that for some of you the time periods seem to start a little late, but that's just because we wasn't so quick to adopt new things
