View Full Version : Performance issue with GeForce7800 (very low fps)
Hi all,
I'm very disappointed about my FPS in Anno 1701. I'm around ~15 fps in 1280x1024 (no AA, medium settings), sometime less than 10 fps! It's a little better if I zoom in or I move over the sea off course, but well.. most of the time I'm zoomed out over big island. Tweaking graphic options doesn't give significant results.
I hope it is NOT normal. My conf is Athlon 3400 / 1GB / GeForce 7800 GT. I'm sticked with 84.21 nvidia drivers (unable ton install the latest driver) but this release is not so old (less than 1 year) and Battlefield2 runs perfectly with this config (> 60 fps in 1280x1024 AA).
Am I the only one suffering about it?

Nope, there are a lot of complaints about the fps counts!
I'm pretty sure this game has issues with high-end GeForce cards. This has come up a lot on the German forums too. My 7950GX2 doesn't give good results. Everyone is hoping for the upcoming patch to fix performance.
Last drivers are 93.71 (WHQL) or 93.81 (Beta drivers) for Nvidia videocard:

Are those, ones you can not install ?

Yes, latest official and beta drivers are uninstallable on my machine. If I install them, Windows crashes on next reboot. I must boot on safe mode and reinstall my old drivers (84.25).
BTW I cannot tweak graphic settings in order to have a rendering as beautifull as in official screenshots. In fact I don't have the fuzzy effect for buildings or landscape which are out of focus (even I check the corresponding checkbox in graphic options). I guess it indicates a very bad communication with Anno and my OpenGL/DirectX subsystem and no shaders are exploited.
Anyway I'm glad to see I'm not alone with these GeForce problems. I really hope SunFlowers is going to provide a patch for this because I love this game and I want to play with it in good conditions.
Turman, did you uninstall old drivers "clearly" ?
Uninstall, reboot, try driver cleaner, reinstall new drivers, reboot ?
No I didn't... Thanks for your advice Fbzn, Driver Cleaner is thx.
Anyway my new fresh drivers don't improve my framerate in Anno. :bash:
It's part of the "game", but it becomes expensive as time goes...
No, only $4,999.....
I was mulling over twin 7950, 7950x2 or 8800 and I think I'll have the 8800 put into my new system combined with a core duo 2.4. If that doesn't run than soemthing is wrong.
According to the specs, the 8800, even with "a mere" 786 MB of RAM beats the pans off the 7950x2 with 1 GB of RAM. Almost twice the bandwidth speed and faster RAM. Price is almost identical.
Of course you should always go with the newest technology. It all comes down to how long you can wait. I got my 7950GX2 a year ago. I definitely needed a new card at that time and the 8000 generation was still a long way off.

Given that prices for the new 8800 cards are similar to 7950X cards, but clearly more powerful, the choice is obvious. One guy reports he was unable to get below 30fps with a 8800GTS card...
and with a 7950GX2 you will be unable to get below 24 fps while looking on an island with a settlement and up to 180 fps looking on the water ... so what?
If I had the choice once more, I would get ATI
I can achieve 15FPS with my 7950GX2. And the 7950GX2 has 1GB of RAM. The 7950s have 512MB.
... And the 7950GX2 has 1GB of RAM. ...
there are 2 x 512 MB but they will use only 512 ... rest is called marketing strategy
run Everest and you can see that.
There is a lot of evidence to show that one 7950GX2 is far superior to a single 7950. That's good enough for me.
Hmmm... are you sure that low fps are mainly GPU related ?
As long as you population grows, you've got an increasing of details (more and more things)... but those are CPU handled... no ?
I do not know how FPS i've got on my configuration, but it's playable: i just notice a slow rate of fps when i zoom-unzoom/ scroll with many habitants on Island.
Edit: I launched Fraps to see FPS.
I've made little tests, it's sure that resolutions and effects have an impact on final FPS result... but not too big (on my PC).
I tried to run the game using 800*600 resolution (full options, antialiasing level 1), you've got better performances... but not too much (20-30%) if i compare to my original settings of 1280*960.
And you've got a ratio of (1280*960)/(800*600) = 2.56 more pixels to handle between those settings...
Even if you can not say that there is a linear increase between reducing resolutions and performance: it's sure that 20-30% better performances is low if i compare to more than twice pixels less to manage in 800*600 resolutions.
My conclusion is: "This game is more CPU limited than GPU limited".
So.. i need to find a high-end user with an overclocked CPU (i'm thinking about a E6600 running over 3GHz) and a comparable GPU to see if i am right.
Hmmm... are you sure that low fps are mainly GPU related ?
....
for example:
fredvienna upped a savegame and we tested all the same game with the same zoom levels and the same graphic settings
50 FPS with core2duo E6600, 2GB DDR2-ram (667) dualchannel (4x512MB), ati x1950xtx
24 FPS with core2duo E6300, 2GB DDR2-ram (333) 2x1024MB, NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GX2

it's in german, but just compare the screenshots

One minute...
To compare between 7950GX2 and X1950XT, DO NOT use filterings.
It's a fact that ATI cards handle better filterings (antialiasing/ anisotropic): so i am not surprised by this result.
16 times for anisotropic filtering is huge and heavy (for 79XX architecture).
It will be interesting to do same test without filterings.
Try also to do what i did: use your original settings applied to a 800*600 resolution, compare results.
