One other thing that I thought of, if you opened any of the files with notepad and saved with "wrap text" checked it might have messed the file up.

I found that out long ago and automatically and habitually make sure that it is unchecked before I mess with game text files, just to be safe.

Well, I went back and double checked everything like you guys said and figured out what I did wrong. I didn't use the pakman program right, but I redid it, and everything works fine now. Great mod, btw, started a game on hard as the English. I guess i won't try to inherit anymore territory from my allies, learned that lesson the hard way.

great you finally made it working, zach :wink:I guess i won't try to inherit anymore territory from my allies, learned that lesson the hard way.
but this is strange...

well, generaly, don't claim any territory when you don't have common border with it... but if you have, then you can easily ask...

also it largely depends on relations and on the diplomatic status (none, trade partners, N-A pact, alliance). Generaly the best is when you have common border and NA pact or trade agreement. Allies and kingdoms with no oficial diplomatical status are not very open to inherit lands

(but hey, inheritting is one of my most favourite ways of expansions, so of course I boosted it in my mod  But I distinguish two sorts of allies: 1) those who I am really faithfull and never claim any land (mostly religious partners), and 2) allies that will sooner or later become my rivals (so my tactis ic to swalow them by "legal" ways=marriages )

I got a question, normally you can just make your merchants trade for money with other countries, but in the mod all the money trades are at 0 coins. Do you need to have trading goods to get money trades? If so, it is really stupid, as an example: You start as Flanders (one city) no trading goods. You try to survive with 1-2 income because your merchants only can do 0 coin trades. I then tried to capture another city, maybe i could sell their trade goods! But then when i conquered the city i noticed it didn't have any trading goods.. And i'm not the only one suffering from the lack of trading. When checking the other nations income they also 1 or 2 income. All the other changes are good but i un-installed because the game just is to slow with the 0 coin trading.

If you assign a zero star merchant as a governor he'll generate 2 gold in the province base, 1 one star will give you 6g, a two star = 12, a three star = 12 too, a four star =21g, a five start 21g also.

So get your merchant to 2 stars soon if you need cash. At least thats what I've found with my games.

tenryu described the best way to earn money. The other is to raise taxes....

all nations suffer only at the start of the game. when you get some trade goods the income grows...
btw little advce: Before you decide to capture a province, check what is available there

This way small kingdoms are mostly swallowed by bigger ones. I was upset seing that in every game small kingdoms run over big ones without any resistance because big kingdoms were unable to stand their forces. This way small kingdoms have big financial problems so they are forced to start a war(yes, war has always been the best trade) and plunder enemy's farms. This gives them nice income
and when they will have enough money to build up a town and army strong enough to capture a city, they do it. I really like this way... it's not that damn easy as in vanilla where you have no problems with money

Another advice: speed up the game at the beggining. It's true that on gamespeed 1 it usualy is no big fun at the start... but after some 20/30 minutes real game starts. Vanilla is exact oposition - the game ends after an hour when you have 10-15 provinces and the Europe lies under your feet as you are by far the most powerfull king(all other big kingdoms being overrun by small ones who then split into smaller rebel kingdoms)

I also think about making some basic trade good available from tax collector's office or inn to give every kingdom (even a small one) at least basic trade income...

Alright...I stopped playing KoH awhile ago because it was just too damned easy in vanilla. I really like it, and I really WANT to enjoy playing it, and I've heard much good about Elvain's mod...but can someone give me easily understood directions on how to install it? I just don't understand Pakman, I've tried using it and all I get is a gigantic headache. So, if someone could painstakingly explain how to do install this mod...I'd appreciate it.

Hi, Franz Josef. I am sorry that installing of my mod isn't as user friendly as I'd like it to be
But you need pakman to install it.

Though I think it's not very hard, so here you have it described

1) make backup of the files: Knights of Honor/packs/defs.pak, europe.pak and texts.pak
2) run PakMan
3) open defs.pak
4a) right-click on any file in defs.pak
4b) follow: extract all files - to original directories
5) do the same (step 4a and 4b) with europe.pak and texts.pak (and close PakMan, you won't need it)
6) look that you have now new folders in your KoH directory (there shuold be following: defs, maps, packs, system, Texts
7) decomprime HR mod
8) copy the files from HR mod to your KoH directory - files from HR/defs should replace files in your Knights of Honor/defs etc.
9) check if the files are copied in right places (for example try to open Knights of Honor/defs/Quests and there should be now much more files. First 3 (in alphabetical order) should be questinfo.ini, unite_alexandria.ini and unite_algiers.ini
10) check if there is new folder in your KoH directory (Knights of Honor/images) which wasn't there before you installed the mod (so now there should be following folders: defs, images, maps, packs, system, Texts)
11) run Knights of Honor and enjoy it :go:

I hope this helps
PS: Steps 3-5 are done in PakMan, for the rest you don't need it

I don't get what I'm doing wrong, here...I've not had this problem before. When I go to WinRAR to extract the mod files, it just throws the whole file into the directory- it doesn't replace anything with it. Any idea what I am doing wrong, here? I just end up with a HR16 folder sitting in the middle of my KoH directory.

Take the 4 folders in the HR 1.6 folder out and put them in the KoH directory.

Actually, I think I've discovered what the problem is...KoH is designated read-only, and for some reason Windows won't let me change it. Grrr. Any idea how to change this on Windows XP Home?

Right-click on the folder, look for "attributes", one of them should read "writing-protected" or something and be checked (the square behind it filled). Uncheck it, click OK or Apply Settings and you should be fine.

You say it won't let you do it, so you'll need Adminstrator rights. Log in as the Administrator or an account with admin rights to be able to change the read-only protection.

Thanks Doux, that worked. On a different note...is this mod supposed to give you no children? I've gone through five rulers, none of which sired a heir - just one daughter out of the bunch.

We can't modify children chances or whatever, so that must be "bad luck".. :S

yes, we can't. If we could I would modify it to give (at least the AI) bigger chance to have heirs as it is one of most destabilizing factors of AI kingdoms.

Just want to mention that i lost a game 2 days ago with Elvain's mod.

1. I had taken a province from another state with 2 armies but couldn't secure my position as i was harrassed by enemies armies and loyalist (i had a lot of battles against 2 armies)....i then had to retreat. So i lost the newly conquered territory and then one of mine..
2. After that came the election and the Roman Holy Empire won!!!!:bash:

GAME OVER

:go:

Thanks Elvain

oops, it has never happened to me that the Ai was elected...

but why haven't you refuse it?

the battles, Well, I thought I may not be as good in leading battles when I lost several times, but maybe it wasn't just my inability, but the mod...

PS: it's me who is grateful that you like the mod... it's really pleasing for me

I did not refuse because, if it's like in MOO2, everyone declares war on you and i was already struggling with 1 enemy  . Next time i'll try.

I always fight the battles myself but maybe i am not that good either (or the AI is not that bad) so i always get surprises (the ai gets reinforcements or the ai attacks another city while i am fighting)...:go:

do you know who were the biggest powers.

It depends on situation. If at least 2 of them were close to you it would be quite hard, but if not, you will sooner or later sign a peace with them...(I presume you were the major power when HRE was elected...)
but even if they are close to you they won't attack you if they were at war with several other kingdoms

eventhough I made Ai personalities much more agressive and expansionist, they still don's conquere player's lands much (or I was always too lukcy)

PS: post no.100 in this thread :hello:
