Xuca is right, it was Hero of Alexandria and his toy, the Aeolipile.
Scholars believe that if Heron had ever gone depeer he would have been able to have started the industrial revolution during the 1st century. He was a great mechanical engeneer, invented the first vending machine,(a fountain that gave "Holy" water to the piligrims, for a coin, ofcourse :) ), created doors that seemed to open themselves and "moving" statues of gods:wink: to the amazement of worshiping piligrims.

Edward Somerset, 2nd Marquess of Worcester, published designs for a steam engine in 1663.
Thomas Savery made the first operational steam engine.
DaVinci, great inventor, artist and even anatomist, he could be credited with making the first blank ( good for another question:biggrin: ) and "tank", but he had nothing to do with steam.
Archimedes, As far as I know there is no recorded evidence of him ever using any kind of steam devise, he was/is a one of the greatest mathematician ever thu.
Can't believe you history gurus never heard about Heron:confused:
