Then it doesn't matter if I try to answer Plethora's question (btw 0 posts? ). Now, if I remember correctly, Vlad Tepes was also called Vlad the Impaler (because of a nice habbit of impaling Turks on his feast), but the name Dracula itself was a "hereditary title", like Count D'Anjou or something like that. So if I would have to guess, it would be A. And now waiting for the new question...

Btw if it's Hawk Knights turn, does that mean that we all could give another answer after we've already given a wrong one?

Dobber

Another new rule: You can only once in environ 24 hours give an answer to the same question. If your answer is wron you have to wait till a new question comes or environ 24 hours are over.

Thanks for your question, Traveller! I found the answer in the starting post of the thread. After a 24 hour wait you can offer another answer!

Well it seems Hawk_Knight was inelligible to answer, since it had only been 5 hours since his last answer! What to do now?

Traveller

Well, I say he gives a new question now and watch for the 24h period from then on. And if he (or anyone else, who's on turn) doesn't give a new question for 24h, anyone else could "replace" him.

Yes that is in the rules also! And it is also stated that if the last quizzer does not respond to answers(it does not state how long, but I asume the same 24 hour period would be in effect) that the first person answering can post a new question.

Sorry about that Dobber, didn't notice anyone had answered. Traveller you are correct, A. King Sigismund of Hungary, who became the Holy Roman Emperor in 1410, founded a secret fraternal order of knights called the "Order of the Dragon" to uphold Christianity and defend the Empire against the Ottoman Turks. The word for dragon in Romanian is "drac" and "ul" is the definitive article. However the word "dracul" also means "devil" in Romanian. Furthermore, Tepes is the word for impaller. And yes that was my first post hence the 0. Looking foward to the next question.

Traveller

Heh, your second post is still zero. And btw thanks for the explanation! :go: I guess you're from Romania then, since you know what dracul means on Romanian...

Very welcome for the explanation. I was going through some of these questions and I learned a few things, always a bonus. I'm not Romanian (I'm Canadian), but I do enjoy learning about new cultures etc. It also helps that my gf is Romanian hehe. I also just noticed that my posts is still 0. Don't ask I'm clueless as to why   . Still waiting for that damn question to come though .

Your post count is still at zero because posts in the Colosseum do not count toward your total! There is a big thread somewhere in the archives in which many of us were fighting that decision by the administration to no avail.

And as for the next question, Traveller has said that he will allow Hawk_Knight the 24 hrs to post a question, if he has not in that length of time, I am sure Traveller will then post a question!

More than 24h have passed (as always; I'm thinking of proposing a new rule: an unofficial Black List. People in this list would have only 12h and after this let's say 6h to post a new question, as it is seen that they usually "forget" to enter and only make other people wait. If you go up in the thread you'll notice Frankish Hero, NaVatar and now HK as such "sclerotics"), so go on - post a new question! I'm in some hurry (gotta go to work and right after that - to lectures), so I can't think of a question right now...

NaVatar

Putting me in a black list like that....shame on you Traveller
(the reason I often doesn't give a new quiz is that i only have a ordinary 56/kb modem and often hindered by something so I cannot go online)

I don't think that the "Black list" rule isn't so great because sometimes when you got a answer correct and is itching to give a own question to test the wit of the members but is hindered to go online by work/school or anything else then it's unfare to give a "12-6 hour respond time" to those (like me).
Just stick with that 24 hour rule, please. That's a fair rule.

Btw, do anyone have a interresting question to give? I don't have anyone for the moment.

Which of the following word(s) is an acronym and give the actual full description (A word that is formed by combining some parts (usually the first letters) of some other terms. For example DNA which means Deoxyribonucleic Acid):

A) PHOTON
B) SALT
C) SETI
D) LASER
E) A and B are correct
F) A and C are correct
G) B and C are correct
H) C and D are correct
I) None of the above

If you don't like that question here's another.

A very large percentage of the worlds population is infected (may be asymptomatically, AKA doesn't show any symptoms) by which of the following viruses.

A) Rotavirus (Responsible for most episodes of diarrhea)
B) Norwalk virus (Responsible for most episodic cases of diarrhea within a closed environment such as cruise ships)
C) Influenza (The Flu)
D) HIV-1/2
E) EBV (Mononucleosis, better known as simply Mono)
G) Hepatitis A

Just a suggestion, but I'm thinking that the person posing the question should give when appropriate a quick explanation/overview of the answer once it has obviously been correctly answered. What do you people think? This way we in fact do learn a little something.

Traveller

For the acronym question, I say D. SETI is something like Search for Extra-Terrestrial intelligence. LASER was, iirc, also an acronym, but I don't remember exactly what does it stand for (shame on me, as that's exactly one of the things I'm "studying" - optical physics).

Dobber

The answer to the first question is a choice you did not offer,

I -All of the Above

SALT is "Strategic Arms Limitation Talks"
LASER is "Light Amplification (by the) Stimulated Emission (of) Radiation"
SETI is "Search (for) ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence"
PHOTON is "PHOtonic Transport Overlay Network"

Sorry for being late on saying "Correct" and my hats off to you Dobber. Sorry for forgetting that last option. You make the next question.

For the following question, just as a FYI, the answer was E) EBV. Ebstein-Barr Virus is responsible for the clinical disease infectious mononucleosis. It is part of the herpesvirus family. Most of you will be very confused by this but there are many viruses that belong to this family INCLUDING herpes simplex 1 and 2 (HSV). Another virus within this family is HZV (Varicella-Zoster Virus, subfamily Herpes Zoster) which causes the primary disease chicken pox and a secondary reactivation of this same virus in a previously infected individual causes shingles. Anyhow, worldwide as many as 95% of adults have been infected with EBV. So again good job Dobber and awaiting your question.

Dobber

I would have chosen mono as the answer to that question as well, but I would not have had an explanation as to why I thought that other than the fact that you can have it and never know it because it has never manifested itself, only to be discovered when it does manifest itself at a time when ones immune system has weakened!

Who developed the LASER technology?

A) Mervin Kelly
B) Albert Einstein
C) Charles Towne
D) Arthur Schawlow
E) Arthur Schawlow and Charles Towne
F) James P. Gordon and HL Zeiger
G) Charles Towne, James P. Gordon and HL Zeiger
H) Arthur Schawlow, James P. Gordon and HL Zeiger

Plethora

Well Einstein proposed the theory for it, however he never did actually invent it :bash: . Although Arthur Schawlow at Bell Labs...someone is telling me also Charles Townes helped with James Gordon and Herbert Zeiger had developed the "MASER" which brought about the idea of LASER later on. This physics history buff is telling me that the laser was actually invented in a way by two individuals at the same time however one got the patent earlier. Theodore Maiman was the inventer of the first optic laser in the 60's. You should have added that as an answer. Mervin Kelly sounds familiar for something but no clue what.

Quick comment, you were absolutely correct in what you had said about EBV. In fact many viruses (especially latent lytic viruses), some other microbes as well have that effect. Although the individual is infected, perhaps even actively, they are asymptomatic. For example a good example would be Heptatis B. So those reading this be careful out there, lots of diseases that cannot be detected visually.
