had this in Biology some weeks ago...

Aw, nuts. Here I thought I was clever and all. Your turn Kuno.

Well I didn't know it caused by my free will if this makes you a bit happier...

ok, I'll stay at nature sience...

What's the color of sugar when being in its liquid state?

A) white
B) brown
C) red
D) black
E) doesn't exist.

NaVatar

It's rather basic knowledge in nature science and as I have already guessed for the day I will not "guess" on this one

Largefry07

B) brown

Kuno of Gersenau

You mean Caramel, don't you? Well the nasty thing is that Caramel isn't the same sugar it was made of anymore because there are some chemical reactions happening which cause the color and the taste. So it isn't a simple state change without any other reaction and therefore wrong. (But I thought the same when being confronted with this question first.)

Black. At least if I recall some tests in chemistry class...

now that would depend on whether the sugar is in liquid form from being melted (brown) or if it is straight from the sugar cane in which case its clear :silly:

Kuno of Gersenau

no, for black it is the same thing as for brown. There should be no reaction present except a change of state (like if you melt ice, so it isn't dissolved in water as well ). But if it turns black and starts to smell ugly obviously something else happened as well....

E)Doesn't exist (as I interpret it)

Sidenote: You must heat sugar to about 1000 Celsius to get it liquid...but then it's like magma or something like that

Kuno of Gersenau

I'm not quite sure about these 1000 celsius, but sounds interesting
I was told that the bonds between the sugar molecules are stronger than the ones inside the molecule, so before there is enough heat to separate the molecules, which makes the sugar liquid, the molecules break already apart...So you're right!:go:

Let's stay in the chemistry/biology scene.

The process of mitosis in a cell has different phases it goes through before splitting into two identical cells. How many phases does it max go through (before the "division")?

A)1
B)2
C)3
D)4
E)5
F)6
G)7
H)8
I)9
J)10

(sorry if I don't make sense but it's a hassle to translate something you have never heard in english  )

You must heat sugar to about 1000 Celsius to get it liquid:

dunno if I did the quote thing right but anyway... er sorry to dissapoint you but if you had to heat sugar to 1000 C to melt it... then surely there'd be a lot of burnt people around from drinking coffee etc and if you've ever tried cooking with it you'd see it doesn't take much heat at all (try caramel potatoes sometime:go: )

and as for the cell division I guess D - 4

I think mitosis has different interpetantions of what it really is. Some included the stages of growth and development, just the actually mitosis process, and some include cytokinisis (spelling ???) as a phase. I have had teachers that tought it all of the ways. With this the phases could be from 4 to 8???. It has been a few years since biology but I think the max could be considered 8. I think the amount of phases that is most commonly accepted is 4 or 5. Since 4 has been taken, I'll use 5.

About the question: After Largefry's post and some serious rememberance i'm not sure what the right answer should be. The common, as LargeFry said, number of phases in a mitosis is 4-5...but...let's state that the question is how many phases it goes through maximium before splitting. Sorry for the inconvience.

So, 4 and 5 is wrong.

6? I've had that in school about a year ago but can't remember well...

NaVatar

Nope. I can reveal that I included a phase commonly thought to be the same as the one before.

well how about 7 then?

NaVatar

Wrong. Getting warmer

8? I still didn't find the intension to look it up...:silly:
