Can I have the beer now?
I edited my post, Richard, your turn. hawk_knight could delete his, and post one below mine, since it would be a little odd that he recives news about CL, for whom he's basicly uninterested.

@Traveller: no, I'm here! :D
Kuno's log
These lines will maybe be the last ones in my life, we're in big trouble. After we left the city we were riding two days, and camped near a forest. In the night someone threw torches between our horses, they ran away. Then the arrows came, two men sunk to the earth and didn't rise again...
We don't know who is out there, if we're still alive when the sun rises we will see, I fear that there ist a contingent of Byzantines...
Hopefully they wait for daylight, and then we will give them a battle, maybe our last but the same it will be for many of them too...
*ok, isn't very mauch, next part in the next two days...3
but hava a round on my costs anyway..

no Traveller, I don't want to die, at least not yet...;)
That's good to hear. We have lost too many bards already
Xuca I don't knwo how to make my story now. Why would Cl need help, didn't he had like 5,000 men? 500 rieders shouldn't bea problem from him
I somehow missed that part. Let us say, 2000 riders + half of his men?
Traveller

2000 riders are somewhat visible force (and they need to be light cavalry, which isn't Byzantine special), but except those half of his men, which turned back on him, he could be himself somewhere with a smaller army. Let's say he has sent some of his (loyal) men somewhere and a big part of the rest rebelled when they saw that the emperor has sent forces to revenge them. So, from those 5000 men, 2500 are rebels, 1000-1500 are sent somewhere, so CL's left with only 1000-1500 against the ~4500 enemies (which would also make him a hero on the battlefield for holding on until you come). But then again, thus his army would be severely diminished, so you would have to give him more of your own (or "mine" or Mercian, maybe) troops to command, if you want him to have some real role. Unless he prefers to lead a small army, of course...
We were all too busy meeting and discussing strategy, so we just overlooked such an army.
ok, 1500. And CL should write something, before we arrive to help him.

Ok, although I'm thinking... 1500 is a little too small. Maybe he should have 2000. Or the Byzantine horsemen would be less than 2000...
Btw one funny thing: I watched a TV show yesterday and there was a guest there, which left my mind completely astonished. He's a 27 years old philologist and he speaks lots of languages. And by lots I do mean LOTS! They numbered over fifteen, which he speaks perfectly, in written and verbal form. Such were, of course, most of the modern ones like English, French, Russian, Lithuanian, German, Dutch, Italian, Spanish etc. Furthermore, he's teaching 15 languages (in the Sofia university he's certainly teaching Latin and Old-Greek). Even furthermore - he understands (and could speak, but not so fluently as the others) over 20 other languages, among which are some like Chinese, Koptish (Egyptian), Sanscrit, Bretonic, Gaulic and some other "exotic" languages. Currently he's learning Japanese and they had a bet that after a month and a half, he'll be again in the show and would've learned Hungarian (which he doesn't speak for now)! God, I can't even imagine how one man could speak, or at least understand, nearly 40 languages!
And another thing - He said that to the Bulgarian language the closest (except for the Slavic ones, of course) are:
1. The Baltic languages - Lithuanian and "Latushian" (he probably meant Latvian?)
2. The Germanic languages
3. The Iranic languages
So, Eric, two rounds of beer for everyone, who's Slav, Lithuanian, Latvian, German(ic) or Persian!
And one round for the others (sorry, guys, maybe next time  )!
Hey, two beers!
btw. some people say that for us Chinese is easy to learn. I don't know, haven't tried it yet.
