Frankish, after swiftly slaughtering the barmaid, returns with the others to talk about the story
Can anyone remind me exactly what I was doing?

You were standing around confused in the great army's camp and, as far as I remember, managed to get in touch with the commanders.
Read it up in the story-thread (ctrl + F).

The good thing about writing exams is the party after you wrote them. The reward for passing them is the second party after the results are ready. :go:

For those of you, who have forgotten or know nothing about the Tavern story and its "plot", check here (http://forum.sunflowers.de/showpost.php?p=143208&postcount=35)! And btw, although some beers have already been ordered anyway, I'm still ready to buy beer to everyone, who writes something. Including you, NaVatar, especially since you have the will and inspiration (although I'd prefer to wait a bit with the Adrianople battle till we actually reach it)!
And congrats, HK! When will you know how you performed?

Frankish' Log
I had been restless in my sleep the past few weeks. Dobber, the only man that could tell me about my father, had died, and I didn't believe the others trusted me a lot. I had many disturbing dreams about fire and blood and couldn't shake the feeling that we would be defeated by the Byzantines. I kept my fears secret for the others, and I knew I couldn't leave now. My father wouldn't have done that.
I requested an audience with the Bulgarian King so that I could speak to him about this...

Navatar's Journal
The three armies
It was a bloody battle by any standards. Three armies clashing infront a besieged castle was bound to be messy but I never anticipated that it would be THAT much. I probaly should backtrack so that historians gets this right.
After we had been fired at by those Irish archers and Edward was severly wounded I had barely managed to drag myself and a wounded higlander called William into some bushes nearby. A dozen of those Irish riders rode past us, towards our army. I heard some yelling in the distance and only two minutes later one Irish rider galloped -like the devil himself was behind him -pass my hideout. I heard shouting and soldiers marching from the east and I knew that those highlanders were charging. Can't blame them though. Their king had been shot at and wounded under a peace flag and they were surely filled of revenge. Although I would have liked to solve this matter peacefully with least amount of casualtites this was now immpossible and I knew that this battle would be anyhting BUT peacefull.
When Edwards army were close I helped William up to his feets and left the bushes. When the highlanders noticed us some ran towards me and the rest were slowing their pace (maybe their anger decreased when they saw me still alive, I don't know)
"Are you hurt my liege?", asked a sturdy Mercian soldier called Erik.
"No, i'm fine but this highlander is wounded. Take him to camp and treat his wounds"
"But sir, we are right about to charge the irish! If we linger to long they will run over us!"
"Don't be silly Erik! They have a siege going on and if they DO attack us they will leave too little men at the gates and will be attacked by the Welsh. They have seen our army and they will not attack until they have gathered more troops and they will most surely wait for daylight. Now go! I stopped his bleeding but you must hurry!"
Erik was a clever man who had been with me since I got this "king" stuffed in my troat so he knew to take orders so he took William and with help of one highlander and rode to our camp to get him to the doctor. It wasn't far so William would survive.
I ordered the men to stop their march and to build a barricade quickly. They didn't listen to me at first but then Edward rose - supported by two of his men - and threated to hang the ones who did not listen to me. That stopped argments I noticed and not before long they had started and finished a rough little barricade with a rugged wall and some sharp wodden poles at the front to stop eventual attacks from the Irish.
I sended out some fast men to cover north and south so we wouldn't be flanked. When everything had settled down and many were going to sleep I went to the tent where Edward was lying, under supervision of a doctor.
"How is he doing?", I asked
"Kinda good. The arrow went deep but didn't hit any bloodvessel so he will make it, although he will not be able to walk for three-four days at least.
I nodded and sat besides the Scottish king.
"How are you holding up Edward?"
"My leg's killing me" he answered and I couldn't help to smile.
Edward turned over to me and fixed his eyes at me.
"Thank you Navatar"
"For what?"
"For acting so fast when we got attacked and for stopping my army march towards the castle. If you hadn't acted so fast I and surely all my men would been dead by now. Thank you"
I couldn't help to blush a little
"I just did what I had to do. Many would have done equally good"
"No they wouldn't! Many would've left at that point but you stayed and helped my army regain their sanity. For that you got my sincerest thanks and my everlasting alliegence!"
"Thank you Edward, I really need an ally in these times. But slow down on the 'everlasting' talk. We still have a big awful war on hands and let's finish that before we start insulting the stars" , I replied with a smile and Edward lauged.
The morning I was surprised to see Edward giving orders to the sergants. I walked up to him and I noticed he was walking with the help of sturdy looking staff. After few hours preparing we marched on towards the Irish army and the Wellish castle. I suggested that we send some squadrons to the forest in the south and let them march some yards infront of us so they would flank troops coming at us. Edward agreed and we started to march.
I wasn't surpised that we weren't attacked while we walked on the main road towards the castle.
After one an half hour we reached the castle. The Irish knew that we were coming so half of their troops had formed a line infront of us and the rest had stayed to besiege the castle. I kinda knew that the Welsh would sieze the opportunity to break the siege and when they did there were bound to be a huge battle between everyone. There wasn't lots of different approches now as it was too narrow to try to flank the Irish so we ordered our troops to form a line.
After a heartbreaking silence Edward and they scottish sergeants took out horns and blew a thundering sound of it and then the both armies charged each other. The clash costed many men and the fighting continued many hours without any advantages for any army. I knew that the first army to make a mistake would be perished. It seemed also that the Welsh had taken that opportunity to charge the other half of the Irish army. When the Irish falled cleverly back a little our army (Mercians and Scotsmen) meet the Welsh army. It was terribly to look at. The amount of soldiers and bodies were humoungous when these three armies fought infront of the castle.
Our side began to falter and Edward an' I didn't know waht to do. I turned to Edward and looked into his eyes, which burned of passion.
"Let's hit them with all we got", I said to Edward.
"But we only have one reserve troop left and what can they and twentyfive bodyguards do?"
I turned my horse around, rode toward a mercian soldier who had a weapon wrapped in a blanket on his knees. When I came close his eyes suddenly gained a boost of hope and he laughed a little
"It took you some time sir" he said with a blink and then he unwrapped the big weapon and handed me the sword my predecessor, **************, had used in the battle which took his life and saved England from the normans.
I grabbed the huge sword with my hands and rode back to Edward.
"With you're permission Edward" I said to him with a hint of a smile
Edward lauged a heartly laugh. "Of course honourable Navatar." he said, then he gave orders that the last reserve should charge. He also gave me command of the bodyguards (Edward's leg haven't fully healed up so he couldn't join the last charge)
Before I blew my horn and charged off Edward turned to me and asked: "Why do you risk your life?"
I said without turning around "To end this"
I blew my horn and we charged at the flank of the Welsh troops and we whomp many in our tracks. When the still alive soldiers from Mercia and Scotland saw me, swinging my great sword, their morale rose high, they gathered around me and they began to fight with hidden reserves. We pushed the welsh and the last remaining Irish troops further and further back until both armies routed or surrenderd by dropping their weapons. The routing Irish troops were left alone but the Wellish were hunted down to the very last man.
It took many hours before we got order in our army again and then two big highlanders with blood splatted armors came to me and Edward with a tied up man. It was the Irish king. The soldiers put him on the chair in our improvised tent and left with a nod to Edward.
The man looked down on the ground knew he was a beaten man.
"Why did you attack us?" Edward asked
The irish king shook his head "We thought you were Wellish reinforcements or allies."
I couldn't hold back my anger and spurted out "We were riding under a peace flag! Why did you shoot us anyway!"
The Irish king looked up suddenly at me an' Edward.
"Peace flag? My captain told me that you were charging us last night and they had barely escaped your wrath!"
That cleared many things and after we talked to the king some time we let him and his army sail to his homeland if he promised to not to attack Mercia nor Scotland ever again and left the Welsh castle to us. He agreed ofcourse and with pleasure too.
Edward wanted to give me the castle but I did not accept as it was thanks to Edward and his awesome warriors that saved me at Mercia and this battle. He was grateful and after handing me couple a squadrons of reserve warriors to me I left with my troops to march back to Mercia where I longed more and more after every day that passed. I couldn't wait to see my twin boys again.
There were finally peace in England and in some sort, in me.
I have experienced many campaigns and battles. It feels like it was yesterday I and my former comrades fought agains't the normans. It feels likes yesterday I was betrayed by a unsurper and almost died in the hands of him. It feels like yesterday my boys was born.
When I finally got back to Mercia and hugged my family, I swore then a Oath that I would never leave their side ever again. My wife laughed at me after that. I wonder why.
The end
